View Full Version : "The Chief" Robert Parrish wasn't enamored by MJ

Hey Yo
03-24-2015, 05:29 PM
Parish left the Celtics in 1994 for Charlotte, where he played two seasons. His final year in the league was in 1996-97, when he played with Michael Jordan in Chicago and won another ring.

There, he regained an appreciation for Bird's leadership style.

"What set Larry apart from Magic and Jordan was he wasn't an in-your-face leader like they were," Parish said. "He had too much respect for us. If you weren't having a good night, he was more inclined to encourage you, or not say anything at all.

"But Magic and Jordan would jump all over you."

In one of his first practices with the Bulls, Parish botched one of the plays and was amused to find Jordan jawing at him just inches from his face.

"I told him, 'I'm not as enamored with you as these other guys. I've got some rings too,' " Parish recalled. "At that point he told me, 'I'm going to kick your ass.' I took one step closer and said, 'No, you really aren't.' After that he didn't bother me."

Jordan getting punked by this bean pole. No surprise there, Jordan was a fake tough guy. Always trying to compensate for his baby dick.

Well maybe Bird should have taken notes from Magic's leadership while he watched Magic lead the Lakers over his Celtics 66% of the time they met in the finals..

Interesting perspective. I could see how the in-your-face motivation might add more pressure on teammates in already extremely tense situations.

I totally forgot he was on the Bulls. Did he not get a ring in 96 because of injuries?

Magic's win and Birds loss in 1987 had nothing to do with leadership. LA should have swept Boston considering the circumstances.

For another thread, though.

Parish is a beast. I can't think of what movie star he looks like in that picture. Mj should respect his elders. Parish probably remembers kicking mjs ass in the 80s. Best word is amused. He's like lolok mj.

He played for Charlotte in 1996 according to BBref. He won a ring in 1997 with the Bulls.

Yeah those 80s guys weren't intimidated at all by Mj. Think the whole intimidating mystique began 2nd 3peat iirc.

Robert Parish was lowkey a goon though. He just appeared to be a nice guy. I seen him check the shit out of a couple of people in the 80s.

By 1997 not only was Parish much older than MJ, but as mentioned earlier, he had been a member of a Celtics' squad that had swept young MJ twice and already had nearly as many rings. As a big man Parish had battled against prime Kareem and Moses Malone. There was nothing intimidating about MJ whatsoever to Parish.

Bump it for what? It still doesn't mean he's not the GOAT, hell Parish might even think he's GOAT..He just doesn't approve of his leadership style and I don't blame him. I don't like people in my face either. But he's not judging MJ's place on the all time list..He's simply talking about his leadership style. Parish at this point was like 100 years old, and had already played with GOAT level players, why in the hell would he be enamored with MJ?

So stop letting your Lebron insecurities show...

He had a rep as a guy who took no mess off of anybody. Laimbeer learned that the hard way when he tried to do the Laimbeer Schtick and got his face broken.

Read that one before...

Didn't Parish use to practice karate or something?

Chief kept that stoic demeanor and few used to mess with him, dude seemed chill but had that frightening factor going on, if disturbed... This is what happened to Laimbeer:

True. He didn't get into too much fights, he wasn't viewed as a big goon... But few used to mess with him, he had the rep of not to be ****ed with.

Part of that was just being a big in the 80s. If you didn't check guys occasionally, you wouldn't be successful in that era.

MJ wasn't a real tough guy. Never has. In many cases he just talk tougher than he was. He's not a coward either. Far from it. You could say he's just above average in terms of "toughness".

To say those things to Robert Parish, you can't be cowardly. He's a large man who could mess you up. He's tough enough to say it but not tough (or stupid) enough to really follow through.

It's like you met Fedor and shouting insults at him. Clearly you have some bravery.

:oldlol: love it

Never did think bullying was a good way to "lead" a team. Call a guy out for not hustling, get mad, w/e sure. But to threaten to kick people's asses and shit like MJ used to do? Punch guys in the face? (he did that, can't remember who but he punched guys). MJ was a bully to the degree that it was counterproductive to his legacy. He'd have achieved the same success without trying to intimidate his teammates, I've never heard of any stories of Bill Russell punching his own teammates and calling them ******s, and he was better at winning than MJ.

Steve Kerr was one of them, I can't remember off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure MJ has puched out multiple team mates :oldlol: . It's kinda a chicken shit move because if you are MJ's team mate you know in the back of your mind there will be hell to pay if you seriously fucc him up.

I found the excerpt. I was a little off, but the gist of it was still the same:

JORDAN AND BILL CARTWRIGHT
MJ and Bill Cartwright were, for a time, co-captains of the Bulls.

Sam Smith, in ""The Jordan Rules"" wrote that Jordan had no respect for Cartwright, told his teammates to keep the ball away from Cartwright in crucial late-game situations (even if coach Doug Collins called a play involving Cartwright), and bellittled the veteran publicly. Cartwright confronted Jordan:

Excerpt: He didn't do or say anything to anybody until late that season, when he told Jordan he needed to talk to him.

There was little small talk exchanged. "I don't like the things I've heard you saying about me," Cartwright told Jordan.

Jordan stared at him.

"If I ever hear again that you're telling guys not to pass me the ball," Cartwright continued, "you will never play basketball again."

Not in the shape to do it now, but if I keep up strength training, the version of myself in about 2 years would have body checked the shit out of him. It's really hard to piss me off...So stuff like trash talking doesn't faze me...Nor does physical play, but if he pulled what he did on Kerr to me he would of ended up with a bad injury. That shit doesn't fly with me

You don't treat grown ass men like that, especially teammates. He wasn't a full blown narcissist, but he had a strong narcissistic personality and an apparent tendency to rage out treating people like shit...Which is the kryptonite to my usual easy going/nice personality.

Russell/Bird leadership style > Jordans
