here in Canada, our high schools go from grade 8 to grade 12. we have teams for grade 8, 9 ,10, but grade 11's and 12's play together(senior). this makes it pretty easy to make the team, and i've heard that some schools even have B teams.

in the US, i know that it runs from grade 9 to 12, but does everyone try out for varsity?

At my high school, JV ball also was pretty impressive to make. Varsity ball was often based on talent alone but often times if a coach sees the same kid play for him all four years, he lets him on varsity as a senior even if he's not good enough. Probably will ride the bench but every few years or so, our high school team makes it deep into the league's playoffs. We haven't had anyone really spectacular in our high school come out. Just a few low division 1 athletes and 2 or 3 players coming out as division 2/division 3 for boys and girls basketball.

Depends where you live on how big high school basketball is. I know it is really big in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, NYC. I know a former point guard for a Southern California high school team. Deceptively very athletic kid. He always blows by me in the gym, he's way stronger than he appears.

Basketball was relatively a big sport where I grew up. There was a pretty famous park in our school district that had all the best ballers go to during the summer months. I remember them having metal nets too. Place was rundown but was where all the good players were.
