This goes back to the first televised presidential debate. Supposedly folks listening on the radio thought Richard Nixon had won, but folks watching on TV thought Kennedy had won. Nixon was sweating and shifty looking. He also had bad 5 O'clock shadow and refused to wear makeup. When Nixon ran again in 1968, he hired a young guy who told him how to come across better on TV and how to use the medium.
