I love to go travel with no real plans, just hop on the plane and figure things out along the way. Travel light, book hotels and tickets on the spot, decide what to do on a daily basis.
Favorite places to travel were probably Japan and Taiwan.

When were you in Algeria/Iran and under what circumstances? I'm sure they're beautiful places but haven't heard of them for tourism.

It was back in 2010. I had an Egyptian girlfriend and all she ever wanted to do was visit those places. Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Turkey, Algeria, Iran, Israel that was all with her, Iran and Algeria obviously being the most "exotic" destinations.
We just visited Algiers and some of the Roman ruins to the east on a tour, we could have also gone to the sahara in the south but we opted not to. Very constrained way of travelling. Essentially whenever you are outside the hotel there are a bunch of people with you at all times. They come pick you and the other jamokes up in the morning, they bring you back to the hotel sometime before dinner and then you just sit in the hotel playing cards until it's time to sleep because they tell you to stay inside. I hate that way of traveling but my ex was all about that.
It's kind of crazy to visit the ruins there. If they were anywhere near Rome the place with 5000 tourists at any given time, but there it's just you and your group. And there is nothing there, nothing to explain what it is, the guides don't know shit, you kind of just have to know what it all is. Algiers on the other hand..is not very interesting. You mainly stay in the old French part of town, and it's mostly just a shitty degraded version of of an old French city. Overall probably one of the worst trips I've been on, but a huge part of it is that you just don't get to do that much. Tunisia and Morocco are vastly superior as a tourist, it's no surprise they are so much more popular.
