The offensive player cant use the rim for assistance, but can a defensive player do it?

Should be illegal.

You can't put your hands on the rim when the player on offense is about to shoot the ball. Imagine is Dwight decides to hang on the rim for defensive purposes.

I believe that should have been illegal. However, the play happened so quickly and the rim contact was so brief, that I never noticed it on the first multiple views (before entering this thread to see the super up-close slow motion).

Here's what it looked like in real time, with some normal replays: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAvWYmXJzqU

Now that I'm looking for it, I can see it on the regular views, but never crossed my mind before I saw this thread.

This.

Hanging on the rim isnt illegal unless it stops the shot from going in.

Greatest block Ive ever seen.

Goal-tending, if you grab on to the rim as a defensive player as a means to impede the shot of an offensive player it is goal tending, this is a clear rule violation there's no grey area about it. The refs must have just missed it.

He didnt get the shot up/above the rim. Not goal tending.

Doesn't need to be, he was in a shot attempt whilst the rim was grabbed by the defensive player - that is an illegal type of interference under the category of goal tending.

I would be ok with it as long as the ball doesn't get to the rim, thus it would almost never be worth hanging on the rim.

Looked to me like Blake let go just in time either way. Someone post the rule against it.

Looked to me like Blake let go just in time either way. Someone post the rule against it.The thought process here would be using the rim as an aid, I believe. Regardless of when Griffin let go, if it could be deemed that he may have possibly gained an advantage from grabbing the rim (such as an extra millisecond of hang-time or a pivot point allowing him to spin around slightly quicker) then it would be an illegal maneuver.

To take it to the extreme, if Griffin had done a chin up on the rim then sprung himself very high in the air, all before a player attempted a shot - whether a shot were above the rim or not would not matter - it'd be an illegal maneuver nonetheless. The general concept is the same, just at different ends of the extreme.

In the case tonight, again, it all happened so quick in regular motion that it was just tough to tell what was happening. I think he may have gotten away with one.

I've been a Clippers fan since 99 and I hate when Blake grabs the net when he's making a good defensive play. He does it subconsciously sometimes and gets called for it a LOT, I don't know when he'll learn.

In this case it wasn't called and he didn't really hang on it so he would have blocked him either way- looked amazing and I'd rather just enjoy it than talk about if it's illegal or not.

Should've been a basket too from how the rule reads. "If he touches the ball during a field goal attempt, points shall be awarded consistent with the type of shot,"

Definitely touched the ball during a field goal attempt, lol
