If he hadn't gotten injured, Yao was in position to be a top 2-3 C all time.
And Dwight is overrated AF.

Peak Yao was one of the only players to give Prime Shaq some trouble.
So what do you think.

Yao is a far superior offensive player, but Dwight is way more athletic, mobile, and thus a better defender.
Houston doesn't lack scoring so as weird as it sounds I think they are a better team with Dwight.

Healthy Yao? In his prime compared to current Howard?
Rockets would probably be better IMO. Yao gives the Rockets a a legit low post presence, you can run the offense through Yao when Harden isn't getting his calls. Yao is underrated defensively as well...
Prime Yao vs 2011 Howard is another question though.

What if not full prime Yao Ming...But if he was still in the League today at 34 years old, fully healthy...

09-11 Howard on this Rockets team would be crazy. People forget how great this dude was. Hell, he was pretty monstrous last playoffs.

Interesting...Top 2-3?
Shaq
Hakeem
Wilt
Jabbar
Not in any order, but that would be tough to crack the top 5

Yao was an underrated defender. His low post defense was much better than Dwight. At that time, Yao didnt get the verticality benefit that guys like Hibbert gets now. Refs used to call fouls on him even if he was vertical. 7,6 Yao with the Hibbert verticality rule would be a better defender than Dwight.
Yao on these Rockets would be the best player on the team. Dwight is not right now.

I like Yao and don't like Dwight but I feel like Dwight is getting underrated here.
Prime Dwight was a monster on both ends. Especially defense.
Yao Mings offensive game was polished but he could be bodied and muscled and taken out of his comfort zone. He was also prone to stamina issues and his defense suffered from it. He was also never a good rebounder for his size.
Basically, the term "soft" was used for Yao quite a bit when he played. He was more finesse than power.
Again, I'm a Yao Ming fan but he just wasn't an impactful player. Dwight was and can still be on the right team. Remember Houston went on that crazy 20 something game winning streak when Yao was hurt.

yao is underrated as a defender. one stat that doesn't show up is how many shots yao CHANGES due to his sheer size. not as flashy as blocks, but he defended the paint quite effectively.

Yao is actually a better post defender. Dwight's defensive advantage is (was?) in his mobility. Dwight's much better hard showing and running back to his man and on switches in general.
Offensively: ofcourse Yao. Better isolation scorer, better catch and shoot player and most importantly a reliable free throw shooter.

Peak Orlando Dwight > any version of Yao.
But peak Yao in place of current Dwight...the Rockets are winning it all.

we got a glimpse of what yao's prime could have been, but was cut short due to injuries, an unstoppable sky hook , good midrange, great passer and you cant intentionally foul him

no he wouldn't. dwight is one of the best defenders to ever play basketball. yao was just so slow footed. it GREATLY hindered his defense.

yao might have been better on post defense but no one posts up and dwight was phenomenal at post defense too.

Only problem with Dwight is he has absolutely zero offensive game outside the paint.
Yao can shoot the rock. Fade-aways, 15-18 footers, back people down etc etc, he had an extremely well-polished offensive game.
Dwight can't make his free throws and he couldn't hit a 15 footer to save his life, this allows defenses to sag while Yao opens up the floor for his teammates.

this is true, but you'd be surprised on how much this really doesn't matter. it's not a big deal at center. nik vucevic can do all the things you just described, but if you offered me rudy gobert for him i'd do it in an instant.

I don't see why there's a discussion about Dwight vs. Yao.
Dwight wins 10/10. There's no argument.
Since 2002, the Top Three best centers in the league have been:
1. Shaq
(huge championship & scoring gap)
2. Dwight
(huge impact & accomplishment gap)
3. Yao

seriously, i dislike hustons fans, i think they are bunch of rednecks, and often overrated any of their players. but, yao vs dwight? lol c'mon, anyone with common sense will pick yao.
remember few years back there's only two legit center? shaq and yao. (Timothy is PF)

I mean I'm not a Ming hater or anything close to that, but one of the biggest criticisms of him is that he was too slow footed and soft. In today's league where defending the paint is SO important, that is a big detriment. C's like Kanter, Vucevic, and J-Val can make moves that a center like Gobert or Whiteside couldn't dream of. Hell, Vuc is a better jumpshooter than Yao ever was. But guess which centers make the most impact? Gobert and Whiteside. Because they are quick and can play defense. Yao was a very good one on one defender though just because he was so big, but that isn't that important. Peak Dwight is one of the best defensive players EVER, and arguably the best of this era. That just makes him much more important than Yao.

No he didn't...Perk might have been able to contain Dwight here and there but ownage he did not. Even looking at the games where Perk held Dwight to single digit scoring, dwight was still grabbing 20 boards to Perks 5. Perk being the Dwight stopper was some BS media narrative, which Perk made his entire earnings off of.
