They have an article up about it, talking about the new features, the intention (mobile optimization is indeed a big part of it, along with the social network availability). The infinite scroll they talk about. They do provide some reasoning. They said in January of the nearly 100 million visitors they had to the site, something like 65% visited from a mobile device.
I was going to copy and paste some bits from the article in here, but alas, can't copy and paste. One touch to post it on pinterest, but no copy and paste.
I'm sure I'll get used to it enough that I'll bitch about the next design change.

shits wack on a phone too. **** a mobile site. I always view shit as desktop on my phone.
I might seriously stop going to espn. I've tried to go there and the amount of time it took me to check the boxscores pissed me off.
There's really no reason to go there if you think about it. It's just habit. They need to eat the D anyway.

The prior format you were able to see all of the headlines in one glance and just click. Now you are forced to scroll all over the place.

indeed........its fukked
I hate how bright white it is. Youtube did the same thing a few years ago. It is too bright, hurts my damn eyes to look at it.
The site loads fast and the way all the content comes in is really smooth.
Its NBA section beats NBA.com by a mile!

Its pretty much terrible on all fronts IMO.

agree w/everything you said. I always use the desktop version of sites when I have the option. Mobile sites almost always blow ass. Getting to the boxscores on ESPN is now a chore and that was probably thing thing I used from them the most..
