The shear centre of a particular object is the point at which an applied load does not create any torsional internal forces, in which case only axial, shearing and bending forces may exist.

If we are too assume that a structure of a prismatic form is elastic in nature, we can use Hook's Law and Young's modulus to derive a bending stress formula. A bending stress about a particular point is the distance orthogonal to the principle axis (the point of effective symmetry where the product second moment of area is = 0) multiplied by the applied bending moment divided by the second moment of area about that particular axis.

The second moment of area can be calculated using the parallel axis theorem which states the second moment of area about a particular axis is the second moment of area about a centroidal principle axis plus the area of the cross-section multiplied by the orthogonal distance between the two axis squared.
