How would rank him compared to the likes of Payton, Pippen, Frazier, Michael Cooper, Dennis Johnson, Moncrief, etc?

Jordan was so good defensively that his team got better on that end after he retired for the first time.

Are you talking about:

1. Strictly perimeter defense, as in how good only his perimeter defense was, meaning literally guarding only the perimeter, PGs and/or SGs.... this is about lateral quickness, locking somebody down like a magnet, great hands, fullcourt pressure, reading passing lanes, ball denial, always contesting, anticipation, not gambling for steals/blocks hence leaving your man (smart defense) etc....

2. Versatility/Allround defense as a perimeter player, meaning ability to help defense allover the field due to the combination of the above + size/strength that allows you of guarding PG-SG-SF very well and PF perhaps... hell, why not C occasionally aswell, if you are capable.... This is about everything above but also strength/size....

Having both of those above at an elite level like say Pippen makes you a more impactful defender overall i think... so i would say Pippen > Jordan.... but if you talk about strictly perimeter defense Jordan was just as good as Pippen there i think, arguably better... so i mean it depends on what your criteria is here...

As far as those others go (Cooper, Frazier, Payton, Dennis & Moncrief) he was just as good / arguably better at perimeter defense.... i think only Payton had better perimeter defense really, he was a bit more intense.... but Jordan was somewhat more versatile than all of those, he could guard the bigger guys a bit better.... so i would say overall he was a better overall defender than all of them, except maybe Payton impact wise, because that guy had the most ridicilous perimeter defense i ever seen in my life....

TL;DR:

Just my opinion....

Strictly perimeter defense:

1. Payton
2. Pippen/Jordan
3. Cooper
4. Moncrief
5. Dennis

Overall/Allround defense:

1. Pippen
2. Jordan
3. Payton/Cooper
4. Moncrief
5. Dennis

(only those guys you mentioned)

Got him as probably the #2 GOAT defensive SG...

PG:
Payton
Frazier
DJ (more of a SG at his peak though, combo-guard)

SG:
Moncrief
Jordan
Cooper

SF:
Pippen
Rodman
Bowen/Gus Johnson

Top5 overall perimeter defenders in no particular order, I'd probably say: Moncrief, Pippen, Payton, Jordan and Rodman.
