Their job is to arrest the suspect, not deliver 'justice'. That's obviously easier said than done when the suspect has injured/killed one of your friends/co-workers... but using restraint is part of the job.

Criminals need to know that cops will deliver street justice. Some might even shoot, kill and plant evidence illegally if you give them trouble. Imagine if our cops follow protocol all the time, criminals wouldn't hesitate to run every time they're caught.

But cops also know that they might be punished for those illegal acts. People might riot and they lose everything.

It keeps the balance.

There should be a cap on how much the government has to pay out to a person injured in the process of committing a crime. If they want to sue the hell out of the law enforcement as individuals, have at it, but taxpayers shouldn't have to be on the hook for this much, especially at the benefit of garbage like this fool.

Anyone know if law enforcement has blanket protection from lawsuits while on duty? Meaning the the agency will take responsibility for all court awards. Maybe I'm wrong, but I bet they have something like this in their union contracts.

at the end of your trial the public defenders office will give the courts the costs of the defense and the judge will decide based on the financial records of the client

amounts will be anywhere from nothing if you can't afford it to 100% of the costs should you have the money.. even if convicted you still have to pay if you have the money in the bank

Goes to show how much I know. When I have heard the phrase, "If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided to you", I always interpreted it as if you didn't want to pay for an attorney, you could use a PD, and not that you would only be provided an attorney if you literally could not afford one. I'm curious to know if this is income, asset based or both.
