One the primary problems with that article is the reporter was not really acting as a reporter. She had the story in mind and then went in search of the facts. CJR also makes the point, this is not a case of Rolling Stone being hoodwinked, because even if the source was lying/fantasizing/delusional/etc they could have checked her story out better to corroborate what she was saying.

On top of that, for american young people, it's supposed to show how hip and smart you are to talk shit about anything that is considered traditionally important.
