View Full Version : Good part-time work for college students?

I'm a server at a chain restaurant. The money is better than a lot of other part-time gigs, but I ****ing hate it. The longer I do it, the more contempt I develop for humanity. I think it's bad for the soul.
I'm thinking about trying to get a job with Verizon. There's a store near me, I sorta know the owner, and they pay $10/hr plus commission. It seems like a far less stressful job, and I wouldn't have to fetch anybody a side of ranch.
Any ISHers have some relevant advice here? I won't have any real marketable skills until I graduate, so it has to be something relatively easy to get into.

worked as a computer lab tech in college. Easiest job ever. 95% of time was free time.

Yeah, but getting paid to do nothing was cool. Didn't even know much about computers.

Where do you live? If you're in the southwest, how do do you feel driving important packages across the US/MEX border for some prestigious Mexican business associates? You're an Independent Subcontractor, no health/dental but the pay is rather handsome.

You are quite possibly the biggest loser on this forum. Your jokes if you can even call them that always come off lame as ****.
What's your idea of good salary? How much an hour cuts it out for you being good?
I'm sure colleges have an office that gives you jobs

That sucks, how can you enjoy a job where you do nothing? learn nothing and overall stay unproductive. A job I like is regardless of it being full time or extra is a stimulating job and where you can also have fun.

not sure where you live, but in asia you can tutor kids as long as you are in a semi decent college, you actually get paid really well for that and have an opportunity to teach some hot chicks (but you may also get some fking annoying kid)

I'm not interested in anything less than $10/hour. I average more than that at the restaurant I'm at now.

Majority of our college IT was a bunch of computer science/computer engineering kids. I had a few major laptop problems my senior year when my laptop has lasted 3-4 years at that point and they helped have it last for the remainder of my senior year.
One of my former roommates did an internship for some IT company as a comp sci major. His GPA wasn't great at all, I think it was a 2.7 or something. This guy was offering him $25 an hour part-time and $35 an hour (with opportunities of getting raises pretty quickly a year or two in) once he graduated. Apparently his boss really liked his work and told him to just maintain at least a 2.75 or something like that for the remaining time in college.
One of my high school friends said golf caddying in rich areas in the suburbs is a quick way to make good money during the summer. Only downside is as a college kid, it doesn't build your resume like a minimum wage part time job in your desired field might.
If you did really well in some infamously difficult classes on campus, you can make a decent amount of money off tutoring (some braniacs I've heard of made a good couple $100 every month from this).
Networking is key especially for engineering. I've seen some very mediocre GPA (2.7-3.3) get starting salaries of $45-50K for science/engineering degrees from my college. Some of the business grads I know worked at prestigious banks/firms afterwards too. Our school had a good reputation for science/engineering and business although business was a significantly easier major.

Are you good looking? There might be some gentlemen in need of oil change service. It pays very well indeed, could be hundreds to thousands of dollars for a half hour job. It's better if you're still in high school but college will do too.

Security Guard-Sit on your ass and get paid for it, maybe even study or go on ISH at night
Internship-Best thing possible, just make sure you pick the right one
Bartending-If you're social/good personality/good-looking, then you'll make bank plus get women
Drop out and do a trade-Electrician, plumbing, hvac, etc. You'll do an apprenticeship, get paid while you're learning, and have a job that can't be outsourced. Riskier because your body will shut down into your 30's, 40's but can be lucrative when you get to management, inspector status
Resident Assistant-Live on campus for free while getting paid, again there's the women
Just a few off the top of my head fam
