View Full Version : Jimi Hendrix is the GOAT black musician!

Unlike other black music legends Armstrong,2pac,Miles Davis,MJ,Notorious BIG who became legends in fields that was already dominated by African-Americans....Hendrix entered the whitest of white music:rock music and CONQUERED it.
he's inspired hundreds of rock, jazz, blues musicians......there's a consensus among music historians that Hendrix is the greatest guitarist ever...and all 3 of his albums are considered milestones in rock music.

Are not very good.
Rock music became white dominated after blacks got through with it. Probably sometime around the mid-70s.
Before than, Sly Stone, Syl Johnson, Shuggie Otis and others you probably don't even know existed.

Hendrix was big, but conquered? I mean, during his time there where definitely much bigger rock acts than The Jimi Hendrix Experience. We're talking about the exact same time where The Beatles put out Revolver, Sgt.Pepper, the white album, abbey road, etc... And The Rolling Stones were the next biggest rock band.

Yup,conquered.
Hendrix's album are you experienced was the best selling album of 1968.
Next 2 of his albums both reached top of the music charts.
And guess who headlined Woodstock, the biggest rock festival of the 60s?

Nah man.....1968-70 was a time when Beatles were at the end of their primes, bob Dylan had that car crash and was out of the music scene, rolling stones was in disarray(thier band leader died) and didn't regain their aura till '72....led zeppelin had just been formed.
It was Hendrix who was king of rock music at the time....

Hendrix was bigger than everybody, he had an act for himself, the Beatles were a bunch of great musicians, Jimi Hendrix was a force and still is. I would have a hard time making it through a Beatles album now, but Hendrix's music never loses that sharp edge. When you listen to the Beatles you are like: they played nice music back then, but when you listen to Hendrix, you are like god damn this is ****ing good let me crank up the volume.

I don't know if you play any instruments, but I like everybody else who does pretty obsessively learned Jimi's stuff and collected his bootlegs and out of print "albums" when I went through my period of learning how play guitar. His music is really good. I like it. I get that.
After you get over that "Jimi is the guitar god" worshipping period (usually by reaching a level where you are able to recognize that there are better guitar players) you're able to recognize that Jimi was a good musician, but there are better.

That may be how you listen to it, but you'd be wrong.
It would appear you lack any true understanding of harmony or theory. You like Hendrix; good for you.
The only big downside to Hendrix being one of the greatest musicians of all time is that he only recorded three records over two years and he didn't have the opportunity to grow beyond that.
I mean compare Hendrix's first three records to the first three records of the Beatles, or even the last three. It's not even a comparison. While the Beatles certainly got down how to write a good tight pop song consistently, Hendrix completely blows them away in terms of creativity. If you consider the time frame what Hendrix has done is insane.
But three records is only three records. If we limit ourselves to Rock music alone Jimi can make the claim of being the greatest black rock musician ever despite only recording for two years, which is amazing. But mostly because there are not that many black greats in the rock genre. If we broaden the criteria even a little he can't compete with musicians that were just as good and just as influential but did that for decades.

For the record, influence doesn't count that much to me. The Spice Girls sold a helluva lot of records and influenced loads of music and I'd still consider them bad. At the same time Mingus isn't even 1% as influential in music history as The Beatles or Jimi Hendrix yet he's still far more brilliant and a vastly superior musician than them. To me. We are all just arguing something that's mostly subjective anyway, and anyone who pretends it isn't mostly subjective is a pretentious fool.
I'm just saying, if you compare them as equals Hendrix's creativity and palette just looks more impressive than the Beatles. And then considering the Beatles had three great songwriters, that's very impressive on Hendrix side. Of course, when you compare their catalogue and Hendrix has made three albums, all great, and then died, while the Beatles made 12 good/great records, virtually no one is going to state Hendrix's catalog is better.

This is correct. Beatles might have been the first to get credit for a certain style, but many other of their contemporaries made music that held up a lot better over time. Dylan, Hendrix, Stones, even a lot of the Beatles' later solo stuff is better than "I want to hold your hand" and "Love me do." Chuck Berry was writing better pop music than the Beatles much earlier. And the Beatles started writing "deeper" stuff once they heard what Dylan and the Stones were doing.

I'll give you a hint, it's not a fuzzface, 4 plexi stacks, and lighting your guitar on fire.

Of course they were, heavily influenced. But after patterning themselves after the Beatles initially the Stones started doing more real classic rock kind of stuff which seemed IMO to start influencing the Beatles, at least what was to be left of their output as a group.
