View Full Version : Do movie catchphrases no longer enter the popular venacular?

Just one of those relatively meaningless but randomly interesting indicators that eras are changing.

Seems like there are no more "I'll be back's" or "You cant handle the truth's" or "Alrighty then's."

I guess because everyone used to see movies when they first came out. Now people see them for the first time over a much wider spectrum of time, so theres not really enough condensed exposure for them to catch on in pop culture.

Or am I missing some? Are there any classic movie quotes from the last 5-10 years that would pass the "even my mother knows that one" test of fame? I cant think of any.

"You know nothing, John Snow"
"Why so serious?"
"If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you."

Speaking of changes, what happened to the iconic film scores of the past? Summer blockbusters are as big as ever, but I can't remember a single instantly recognizable film score from any of these films.

"Well that escalated quickly".

This is one that you see a lot in "Legendary" Threads across the internet world. The irony is that nowdays, the catch phrases will take off, even if peeps haven't even seen the movies that they come from (I never saw Anchorman or TDK either, BTW).

get these motherf*king snakes off this motherf*cking plane

there are lots. the difference probably has less to do with any distinct evolution in the medium and more to do with your age.

Most of our parents were our age when the examples I gave in OP were popularized and I guarantee they all know/remember them. Also "Keep the change ya filthy animal" and "Life is Like a Box of Chocolates" and "ET Phone Home" i mean these were ubiquitous, americana quotes.

You really think "I am groot" and "Get these mother****ing snakes off my plane" are used nearly as often as those were in their day?? Doesnt seem like it to me.

Cheesy 80's catchphrases have mostly fallen out of favor these days. In related news, cheesy 80's movies have also fallen out of favor these days.

Sounds only vaguely familiar, and Id guarantee it's still not borrowed nearly as heavily by individuals or other media as "houston we have a problem" and "say hello to my little friend"

You could argue that it originally comes from a novel, but "My preciousss" has been obviously made more populat by the movie. And I guess it passes every popularity test you can think of.

I guess. Internet memes just dont feel the same though. You dont hear them repeated by radio dj's or parodied on SNL or used jokingly in personal convo as much. I dont think as many people know where they come from the way you would if I said SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!

LOL you dont think youre actually gonna make me feel self conscious over a fun T shirt that I bought at Target, do you??? :oldlol: What a try hard. Youre gonna have to find another insult for me that might help you eacape your misery my friend. That one isnt gonna work. Keep at it doe.

Also, you would only recognize a tshirt being from target if youve perused the target tshirt section yourself. Maybe lookin for a little somethin to wrap around your shiny dome for that next selfie, hm?

In the 80's there was no internet, so phrases were used in everyday conversation. Now there is a lot of online interaction, so memes are the equivalent.

You can't just expect the phrases to be used a lot in real life, and you can't not count the internet use when the online aspect has become such a huge part of modern life.
