Another exciting off-season begins. We'll see what the front office is really made of. A couple huge holes to fill to be one of the big boys. The lottery next month could change their thinking. I'd guess if they get lucky they might be able to get another rotation player and they might not need Tomic or Booker. If they don't move up got to look to trade or stash their picks. I see at least 3 open roster spaces. A back-up center and a point/combo guard. With money and assets it's just a matter of who. :applause:

Rudy should have gotten 6th man votes and MIP than. Jazz sucked before Rudy took them on his back. Kind of like giving Sloan the credit for Malone/Stockton.

Oklahoma City Thunder center Enes Kanter underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, the team announced today. Kanter, who was acquired on Feb. 19 from the Utah Jazz, appeared in 26 games (26 starts) with the Thunder averaging 18.7 points on 56.6 percent shooting from the floor (196-of-346), 11.0 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 31.1 minutes per game. Another injury. Wonder how this will affect his FA summer.

In the summer of 2013, Lindsey allowed several good veteran players to leave the team to free up money for other players. Gone: Paul Millsap, Al Jefferson, DeMarre Carroll. The Jazz had already blown up the roster once and now they were doing it again. By the spring of 2015 the Jazz were winning again, far sooner than they had expected.

I told you so.

Imagine where they would have been the past two years with Demarre and Paul though. The jury is still out on Lindsey and Snyder. Before Rudy's emergence they were one of the worst teams in the league.

Kawhi Leonard has been named the 2015 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, beating out Draymond Green and DeAndre Jordan.

Leonard won the award despite playing in just 64 games and finished with 333 total points in the voting.

Green received eight more first place votes than Leonard and had 317 total points.

Anthony Davis finished with 107 points, followed by Rudy Gobert with 31 and Tony Allen with 29.

Next year Rudy!

Cotton, who appeared in 15 games with the Jazz, does not have a guaranteed deal beyond this season. Still, his speed, athleticism and shooting gives him a real chance at sticking as the team's third point guard.

He looked like their best pg the last 4 games of the year. Looked like he could be a nice back-up.

http://www.sltrib.com/blogs/jazznotes/2463501-155/jazz-need-to-find-a-back-up

But it's not a killer. Obviously, Rudy Gobert has established himself as a 35 minute a night force in the middle. So the Jazz need to fill in the blanks for about 15 minutes. Really, with Trevor Booker, they are looking for a fourth big.

Booker could be gone. Jazz have money and assets. They need to go after the best guys they can. They might let Booker go and replace him with a 4/5. I'd be looking to play smaller and have your best guys on the court as much as possible with Hood and Maxi G(Ingles too if hes signed) at the 4. I worry that their draft pick will be the guy rather he's ready or not.

That may have played a role in Tomic and his decision to stay overseas. Playing time probably won't be plentiful with the Jazz and their depth in the paint.

Depth? Tomic barely plays 20 minutes a night and they play a lot less games. I'd think 15-20 minutes a night and a higher salary would be plenty.

Still, Utah needs to figure out that hole. They could do it in the upcoming NBA draft.

They could but they'll likely have the same problems they've had with Burke, Exum, Hood, etc.

They could do it through free agency. They may actually bring over Tibor Pleiss, the 7-foot-3 big man they received in the trade for Enes Kanter.

However the Jazz want to do it, finding another big man will be a priority this summer. It will be interesting to see what avenue they use in this pursuit.

Tony Jones

Minimum they need to get a pg and a center. No excuses.

I'd be shopping that hard. Sounds like Knicks wanted to only keep their pick if it was top 3, dunno if there's anyone at 4 we'd take that'd be a big help.

Xiao Yao You
05-19-2015, 11:30 PM
Doubt we could move that high. Knicks wouldn't want Burke. Not sure anyone does? Tomic would fit in the triangle if he's coming over. They might like Pleiss too. Booker's contract is a nice piece as well as their non guaranteed guys and future picks and cap space. I don't think they need to draft anyone unless they think he can help them next season. A young center to develop would be the only other thing I'd be looking for. They need some proven vets to fill their holes ideally.

El Kabong
05-20-2015, 01:09 AM
Seen a few mock drafts with us taking Myles Turner. Doesn't look too bad, but that'll be dependant on him continuing to develop his shot and becoming a stretch 4. Reckon he'll have a better shot at doing that than Kanter did. Plus he won't be a black hole on D like Kanter too.

The key is that whoever is on the court deserves to be there and isn't there because he has potential. Dante needs to play better or remain on the bench or in the D-league. It cost them the playoffs last year.

I'd be giving up Exum before Hood or Burks. If they pick anyone he should be expected to be in the D-league not on the court immediately. Hopefully like Hood they'd have someone that could help them down the stretch. Can't see them taking on Frye if he has 3 years left. I'd say they'd be looking at guys with one or 2 year deals. They have to make some moves. The draft isn't going to fill their holes and neither is an off season for Cooley. Exum and Cotton could be ready by next season but you need to have bodies around and make them earn it. They need to get older and better. They have a chance to be one of the best teams in the league next year but certainly not if they stand pat.

Lindsey acted like Pleiss wasn't ready. I can't see bringing him over at 25 if he's not ready to contribute. Too old to be sending to the D-league. Tomic is ready for sure. They need to start grooming a young guy but it could be someone else they stash overseas not necessarily on the roster.

UPDATE: There are rumors now that he might leave Barcelona this summer and maybe go to the NBA orCSKA Moscow, the club in Europe with the most money. It’s really all rumors though and tough to say what is really true. (http://saltcityhoops.com/international-qa-with-sam-meyerkopf-of-euroleague-adventures/) Tomic is easily a NBA rotation player, if not a starter, but he is a uniquely skilled player and the fit needsto be right. Think whatever the opposite of Gobert and Favors are as players. My guess is if Utah didn’t own his rights and he was a free agent he’d already be in the league. If he really wants to come over, maybe he could also be a trade chip if Utah doesn’t see the fit. What went wrong with Utah and Ante Tomic? Could write a whole article on this but to keep it simple: 1. Tomic lives in Barcelona (an awesome city), plays in the best league in Europe on one of the best teams, and makes way more than the NBA minimum (and it used to be way, way more before the Euro went down in value recently). 2. A different GM drafted Tomic so this new Jazz front office regime hasn’t necessarily been tracking his whole career and weren’t the original ones who thought he had a chance at the NBA. At this point, Tomic is the best center in Europe and easily one of the best players. He’s an offensive freak, a master of the mid-roll, who can hit any shot in the paint, dish, and just move to wherever he wants. His biggest improvement has been defensively where he used to be soft liability and now has become quite active and learned how to use his length. He’s easily an NBA rotation player and would be worth giving a few million to a year, just a question of if this Jazz team is the right fit (http://saltcityhoops.com/international-qa-with-sam-meyerkopf-of-euroleague-adventures/). Salt City Hoops (http://saltcityhoops.com/international-qa-with-sam-meyerkopf-of-euroleague-adventures/)

Jazz need a back-up center which is what he probably is. He's a great passer with a post game. Sounds like he could get more money in the USA. Sounds like a great fit to me.

The Hawks are in need of a strength and conditioning coach as Jeff Watkinson will leave the organization to take a assistant coaching position with the Jazz. Watkinson spent three seasons with the Hawks in the position. He will be reunited with Quin Snyder in Utah. Snyder was an assistant coach with the Hawks last season before leaving to take the head coach position with the Jazz. The two also worked together at Missouri. I see Millsap as an end of the bench defensive specialist/energy guy. If he can start knocking down the 3 he's in the rotation. Hard to see them cutting him. He's too good of a defender and along with Booker and Gobert he was the guy who brought it always.

Ingles looked like a solid 4th wing at the end of the year. I'd be looking to play smaller with him, Maxi G and Hood at the 4 as well and right now Burks is their starting pg in my mind so there are plenty of minutes despite what I keep reading. I'd guess he'll be back but who knows. Maybe somewhere between 2-4 million a year I'd guess but with the cap going up after next year who knows what will happen this summer.

Looks like they lost another coach. I thought they might be going with more coaches. Maybe some of their guys in Idaho now that they own the team. The only reason I can see them not having guys playing in Idaho is because they want them working with their developmental guys but with most of the games on the weekend you could have guys play a couple games in Idaho and spend the rest of the week with the Jazz. Need to do it this year. No more free rides. Guys need to earn their time on the court.

Out of Senegal, the seven-foot Ndoye has played basketball for just the last seven years of his life. In recent drafts, many American prospects have declined the request of NBA teams to be selected late in the second round only if the player accepts being stashed overseas for at least one season. Ndoye, however, is prepared to play overseas in such a scenario.

This could be their guy with their late pick. They made that bad trade last year because there was no one to stash and they didn't want another rookie. This year I think ideally they have one rookie at most. They need a young center either way.

The team is reportedly interested in bringing unrestricted free agent and former Jazzman Paul Millsap back into the fold, according to 1280 The Zone’s Spence Checketts.

Others have reported that the Jazz are trying to move up from No. 12 (Jazz play-by-play announcer David Locke on a New York radio station) and that Utah is looking to improve its point guard situation (NBA.com’s Sam Smith).
The Millsap scenario might mean that the Jazz could look to move Derrick Favors, even though Lindsey continues to rave about the power forward’s progress and potential to help Utah win.

They let him go at a bargain rate and now want him back at max? I love him and I haven't been the biggest Favors fan but I can't see it at this point.

Trey Burke is often brought up as a possible trade piece, too.
I'm sure he's the main guy they will try to unload on someone. Cotton certainly made him expendable if he wasn't already. They need the roster spot for someone proven already.

Lindsey said he’s had many conversations with Jazz coach Quin Snyder about the possibility of playing more small ball, which would make a possible Millsap move an intriguing possibility because of the power forward’s improved shooting beyond the arc.

The last two NBA champions — Golden State and San Antonio — both used small lineups at times en route to their titles. The Jazz haven’t been able to do that much over recent years because of the abundance of good bigs, beginning with when the team boasted a frontcourt of Millsap, Al Jefferson, Favors and Enes Kanter.

Going small now would mean the Jazz would sit their biggest defensive strength, 7-foot-1 Rudy Gobert.

These beat writers see every game and practice and they haven't a clue. Rudy is the main reason you go small. He's arguably their best perimeter defender. He allows you to do almost anything you want around him. I wouldn't feel geat about Favors in the middle with a small line-up but Rudy, Maxi G, Hood and Burks hell yeah! Booker/Gobert looked really nice together as well. A smaller center would be nice at times and that's something they don't have.

“The thing we’d say specifically with us is we’ve had good fortune to collect a lot of good, young players and people, and they’re big,” Lindsey said. “They’re big for their position. We feel as though we want to capitalize on our size.”

Adding another big like Myles Turner (Texas), Trey Lyles (Kentucky), Willie Cauley-Stein (Kentucky) or Bobby Portis (Arkansas) could reinforce that big-man platoon and the Jazz's bigger-is-better mantra.

Lindsey is cognizant that his team used a bigger lineup to finish strongly in last season's second half.

“I think we saw the last 30 games what that can mean relative to our team. There’s no reason why for us to run from that,” Lindsey said. “In many ways, Derrick bails us out of that option. If Derrick was not as mobile or if he wasn’t good with the game plan or lacked instincts covering fours, it would be much more difficult.

“Derrick and his intelligence and mobility coupled with his size allows us to be unique. I would imagine we’ll continue down that path.”

That said, Lindsey wants the Jazz to be structured so they can adapt to lineups other teams throw at them, big and small.

“Roster building in my opinion is like having a good bullpen,” the Jazz GM said. “You better be able to match situations very well, because if you don’t that situation will come up and you’re in a bad way. We’re certainly mindful of that.”

Would assume Millsap is out of the picture now they've drafted Lyles.

Xiao Yao You
06-26-2015, 11:32 AM
Lyles should be headed to Idaho unless he earns his way into the rotation. He's 19. Same goes for Exum and Burke(who will probably be gone). No one should be given minutes this year. Jazz should be looking to win every night this year and they still need a couple proven players minimum. The fact that there's even talk of Millsap has me hopeful that they are going to try to put together the best roster they can. They showed at the end of the year that they should be one of the best teams. You can't sit around and wait for guys to develop anymore. It's time to compete again finally!

He sounds like a good fit. Maybe even has the length and size to play some 5. Defense and extending his range are the questions now. The 2nd rounder sounds like a fit too as long as he isn't taking the spot of the veteran they need at the one. Makes Burke that much more expendable. I'd think Jerrett is probably gone too with Lyles picked.

And he'll give Hanlan an opportunity to compete with No. 3 point guard Bryce Cotton this summer.

To me with his size he's competing with Exum, Johnson and Millsap for time if anything. Exum has to show a lot more this year to earn minutes on what should be a top team. Defense isn't enough. At minimum all their guys outside of their bigs need to be able to hit open 3's. Cotton is their little guy. I'd look for another little guy that is a proven rotation player. Need to be able to play small too. Burke is gone. Let them all go at it in Summer League even Trey. Hood shouldn't play. I'd guess the money they got from Portland could pay some of Trey's contract if they have to cut him. Jerrett too.

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/2670689-155/utah-jazz-lyles-hanlan-introduced-in

Lyles and Hanlan will go to work immediately. They will start practicing for summer league next week. They will make preparations for the upcoming season, and they will do so while getting accustomed to their new surroundings.

Who else? They need some bodies to compete with their non guaranteed guys anyway. I see Cotton and Millsap on the final roster in October now. Johnson and Hanlan have a shot. I actually ended up liking Cooley but he's not a great fit right now. I think he may be able to help someone in the league though. Liked the little I saw of Jerrett too but he's probably gone with the Lyles pick I'd think too.

For Lyles, at 6-foot-10, his role is clear. Initially, he will be the fourth big man in Quin Snyder's rotation, depending on what the Jazz do in upcoming free agency, which starts next week. He can play multiple positions, and his ability to see the floor and handle the ball will be a welcome addition to the forward spot.

Yeah I'd call him the 4th big over Cooley probably but I sure hope they aren't done. They'll get a good look at him before them have to decide on Booker's contract in a couple weeks anyway.

Hanlan is a little different. He's not yet guaranteed a spot on the regular-season roster, and the Jazz have four point guards on the team. That may change in free agency. But if it doesn't, competition for spots could be a significant subplot to the summer.

I keep hearing they won't keep more than 3 pgs but to me Exum can guard 3 positions and is more of a defensive specialist than anything right now. Burke and Cotton are more undersized shooting guards than pgs. And Hanlan is a combo. Burks is their best pg playing out of position. Burke is gone. They still have room for at least one proven vet. The ball will be in the hands of Maxi G, Hood and Burks as things stand right now anyway.

Xiao Yao You
06-27-2015, 11:18 AM
The Jazz might have been impressed by Lyles' honesty, too.

The Jazz will have a conversation with Neto, the Brazilian point guard they drafted two years, to gauge his interest in playing in the NBA next season, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.

He wanted to play two years ago when they drafted him. I think they didn't want to look bad after he outplayed their 1st round pick in the Summer League. I'd guess they were convinced he was ready watching the FIBA last year. Only question is if he can hit open 3's. Supposedly he's good spotting up.

Neto has been playing in Brazil since the Jazz drafted him in the second round in 2013. There is no guarantee that the two sides will come to an agreement, but the sense is Utah would like to have him in the NBA sooner, rather than later.

He's been playing is Spain I think. But why would the beat writers know that.

The question is why? Currently, Utah's point guard spot is crowded. Dante Exum is the starter, Trey Burke could still yet be starter quality, and Bryce Cotton played well in the second half of the season on a non-guaranteed contract.

I'm tired of hearing that Dante is the starter. That job should still be up for grabs. None of them are proven rotation players. Cotton had 5 good games to end the year. Trey and Dante have had stretches.

Plus, Utah drafted Olivier Hanlan with its 2015 second round pick, and the front office likes him alot. But the Jazz feel like Hanlan is enough of a combination guard that he can play both guard spots. So even if there were three pg's on the roster other than Hanlan, the former Boston College star still has a chance to stick on the roster.

Exum guards 3 positions. Burke should be gone. Plenty of room for all of them and a proven vet still.

The Jazz like Neto. They like his speed, they love his ability to play pick and roll and they like his passing. Neto spent two weeks with Utah last summer and he impressed the coaching staff with his willingness to learn.

Don't think I remember that. He's a player. Loves Stockton. Needs to be able to bury a 3 like the rest of these guys.

Should Neto decide he wants to play for the Jazz, he would have to compete for playing time. But he's already 23 years old, and his rookie deal would be staggered next to Burke's and Exum's. It makes sense to start his NBA clock soon, otherwise the Jazz may be facing their point guard version of Ante Tomic, the center who was drafted in 2008, and now looks like he may never matriculate to the NBA.

It makes sense if you think he's as good or better than what you have. I think he's a lot better fit than Trey for sure. He's more of a pg than Cotton. He's more ready than Exum.

Word around town is that the Jazz's number 1 target in free agency is Marco Belinelli. Wouldn't surprise me given Lindsey's massive boner for anyone even remotely affiliated with the Spurs. It's not terrible but I'd rather them go for a more two way player like DeMarre Carroll, Danny Green (Spurs!!), or Wes Matthews. All can shoot the 3 just fine but all play better D than Marco. Carroll would be my first choice but given the year he had he might be too expensive.

Seems there is no longer mutual interest between the Jazz and Paul Millsap. Drafting Lyles apparently put that to rest, though I'm not sure why.

I'm sure they'll pick up Booker's option (and they should) and I'm about 75% sure Trey will be traded.

Alec Burks should play the 1. He could be in the mold of Russell Westbrook at that position. Seeing as everyone else at PG is a work in progress, seems like a low risk high reward option

Xiao Yao You

They need a pg more than anything. Need a back-up center too. Trey will be traded if they can find a taker. I'd guess he could be cut if they don't. All those guys will be too expensive. They have enough money to get one player close to max salary and it should be a pg if they do.

The Utah Jazz could clear more than $16 million in cap space this summer, but that's certainly no guarantee that they'll make a major splash when the free agent market opens up tonight at 10.

General manager Dennis Lindsey and company will be working the phones, making their pitches and trying to fill roster needs. But while other teams are rolling out the red carpets to try to woo the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love and the rest of this summer's biggest free agent names, Jazz officials are prepared for the possibility of a quiet silly season.

I'm not prepared for that! They need some more bodies.

The Millers have approved spending up to the cap. So if the Jazz, if they were to move the non-guaranteed contracts of Trevor Booker, Jack Cooley, Chris Johnson, Elijah Millsap and Bryce Cotton, would have quite a bit of cash with which to work.

I see Booker, Millsap and Cotton on the team to start next year. Maybe Johnson. Cooley has to go. Burke and Jerrett too.

But, clearly, internal development remains Lindsey's biggest focus.
"Our best free agent, I've said this before, is Alec Burks," the general manager says of the shooting guard's return from injury.

He doesn't have to be.

Asked about the need for improved shooting, Lindsey again points to internal development, saying, "I wish I could show you the work that Rodney Hood has put in."

I think they could have enough shooting especially if they get a pg and another big that can shoot.

[QUOTE]Then, after mentioning that teams have inquired about Dante Exum's availability, Lindsey says that coach Quin Snyder is adamantly opposed to dealing the teenage point guard because he believes he can mold him into something more. And, make no mistake, Jazz officials absolutely believe in Snyder's ability to do it.

Obviously, the front office is looking to bolster its talent.

But just how much of that will come when free agency opens tonight?

[QUOTE]It seems the Jazz and guard/forward Joe Ingles have mutual interest in a return. Utah tendered the 27-year-old a qualifying offer, making him a restricted free agent. Ingles was technically a rookie last season in the NBA, but he was also a leader in the locker room and a solid role player off the Jazz bench.

The Jazz also continue their talks with visiting German center Tibor Pleiss.
Utah and the 25-year-old Pleiss, a 7-foot-2 big man who was acquired in the Enes Kanter trade with Oklahoma City, are exploring a contract structure while he's in town.

A signing isn't necessarily imminent, but the Jazz's intent is to bring Pleiss over to be starting center Rudy Gobert's primary backup, according to sources. The FC Barcelona player is known for being an excellent shooter from the perimeter and a big finisher at the basket.
Lindsey said earlier in the year he wasn't sure the guy is ready. They better feel pretty confident he is a legitimate NBA back-up right now on a top Western Conference team. I'm afraid he's going to get pushed around like a rag doll personally. If they bring him over there better be a decent NBA vet on the team as insurance and competition at the very least.

Forward Jeremy Evans is the only unrestricted free agent who played for the Jazz. His future with Utah doesn't look good, however, considering the team drafted a versatile forward in 6-foot-11 Trey Lyles of Kentucky with the 12th pick last week.

His future doesn't look good because of last year. He wasn't a favorite of the new staff. If they end up getting a big upgrade at center and let Booker go I still think he could be a decent 4th big though.

While the Jazz have upwards of $18 million to spend on free agency, the organization's internal thinking is that it might be wise to keep options open in case another team wants to do a salary-dump trade that could be beneficial to both sides.

That should be the last option if you can't get anyone else you like.

Would it? I'd still be wondering what was going to happen at the 1! Why am I the only one that thinks that is obviously the biggest hole right now?

Because your opinion on Dante Exum is drastically different than that of the coaching staff. Snyder has made it very clear to Lindsey that Exum is untouchable; he thinks the kid is special and that his progress is ahead of schedule. The Jazz are going to do exactly dick this offseason at the 1. Exum is the starter, and Burke, Cotton, and Hanlan will battle for the role of primary backup. At most, you'll see Burke traded and maybe a vet brought in, but that vet will be a backup. Like it or not, Exum is the starting PG on this team.

Yeah and the Jazz remain a joke than. They have a chance to be a top team in the league. No should be handed anything anymore. You forgot Neto. Sounds like they are planning on signing him. Burke is gone. I read the untouchable thing. He said he didn't want him traded because teams were inquiring. He didn't say he was untouchable in the line-up. Snyder wants to win. Rudy has made that time now. Exum better show up to play this year. Not sure considering how high he was drafted and the fact he had one of the worst statistical seasons by anyone ever that he is ahead of schedule either.

Burke needs to be there not Hood. Millsap could use it more but with his experience I'm not surprised he's not there. Hood already proved he's too good for this. He could get hurt. Maybe he'll just play a couple games like Deron after his rookie year. He should dominate it. A couple former NBAers on the squad. A couple from Idaho that should feel comfortable with the system. "We've tactically decided to stay out of the free agent wing market in a big way, if you will, for a couple reasons," Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey told 1280 The Zone on Thursday, citing "Gordon's improved level as a primary player", "Alec Burks' return back to health", "Rodney Hood's ability to just make plays off the dribble" and "Elijah Millsap's unique defensive ability."

Problem with that is Burks should be taking most of the pg minutes until someone proves otherwise and Hood. Maxi G and Ingles if he's back should be playing some 4. Millsap is ideally an end of the bench defensive specialist right now. If he can start knocking' down the 3 and playing more efficiently offensively that could change.

The Jazz are still in talks with restricted free agent Joe Ingles, as well as international prospects Tibor Pleiss and Raul Neto. Utah is, of course, still making and fielding calls, and has the cap space to potentially get involved in another team's cap-clearing deal a la the ones Sacramento and Phoenix pulled off this week. Still, it seems more and more likely that this really will be a quiet summer for the Jazz.

"There are free agents available that we want to continue to look at at various price points," Lindsey said. "But again, to state the obvious somewhat, we really are excited about this group and even more so than the excitement, we're eager to learn more about them going into next year."

— Aaron Falk
They'll have to be in play at some point with their cap space. They could end up getting some great deals after everyone else spends their money. If it's an upgrade at the 4 it will have to happen before the middle of the month though.

The Jazz have 19 year old Dante Exum (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/exumda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) and 22 year old Trey Burke (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/burketr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) at the 1 and 2 spots on the depth chart. They just drafted 22 year old Olivier Hanlan (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hanlaol01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com). And currently on the roster they still have Bryce Cotton (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/cottobr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), also 22, on a non-guaranteed contract. Furthermore, they hold the draft rights to 23 year old Raul Neto (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/netora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com). There is youth here, and some manner of depth. But you have the bad sides of both -- inconsistency of play, and a bunch of players who may one day be legit NBA players, but right now aren't just there. The team needs a steadying influence who can run a team while also not being someone who gets in the way of development.

Good to see someone else agrees at least even if it's this guy.

There are a lot of guys on the market who would say no to a contract in Utah: Rajon Rondo (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/rondora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Patrick Beverley (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/beverpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Reggie Jackson (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jacksre01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Matthew Dellavedova (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/dellama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Lou Williams (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willilo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Kirk Hinrich (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/hinriki01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (though he would be nice), Steve Blake (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/blakest01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Jeremy Lin (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/linje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Mo Williams (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willima01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), C.J. Watson (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/watsocj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Raymond Felton (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/feltora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and Jameer Nelson (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/nelsoja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com).

Why would they say no? I'm guessing all of them would come if the Jazz paid them. The Jazz are going to be good. With Aldridge gone they should be at least 2nd in the division and with the way they ended the year in the playoffs.

There's a second list of PG's who may be okay with signing to join this Jazz point guard logjam: Andre Miller (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/millean02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Aaron Brooks (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/brookaa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Norris Cole (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/coleno01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Austin Rivers (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/riverau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Alexey Shved (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/shvedal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Donald Sloan (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sloando01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Cory Joseph (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/josepco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (another Canadian, also Spurs (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/teams/san-antonio-spurs) guy), Ronnie Price (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pricero01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Gary Neal (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/n/nealga01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Will Bynum (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bynumwi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), John Lucas (http://www.basketball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=John+Lucas&utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) III, Jimmer Fredette (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/fredeji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Justin Holiday (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/holidju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Shane Larkin (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/larkish01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and Ishmael Smith.

Miller is an old guy who knows how to play point guard. He went to the University of Utah, and is really on his last legs. But I don't see him joining our squad. In fact, it's almost better to just figure out who will claim the point guard iron throne from the guys already on the team / are currently Jazz properties. Is Raul Neto better than Rajon Rondo or Reggie Jackson? No. But neither of those guys will play here. Is Neto better than Norris Cole or Donald Sloan? Probably.

Neto is better than Burke and better than Exum was last year. Who knows if Burke had had a veteran to mentor him though. It's needed badly.

Yes, I agree that the Jazz need better play from the point guard spot, but the short term solution would be to head-hunt for a better PG. The smarter, more long-term, solution is to do what is necessary to make our current point guards better. It has been the long held position of SLC Dunk that experience matters more than watching. And Dennis Lindsey is making sure that Quin Snyder (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/111859/quin-snyder) is allowed to develop these guys. And he's doing that by not going for the quick fix.

It's time to look short term as well though. Some teams, the Spurs especially are able to do both.

Last season Trey Burke played 30.1 mpg, and Dante Exum played 22.2 mpg. Both need to keep playing a combined 50-55 mpg (and thus, there has to be some overlap as there is only 48 minutes in a game). Having a heady vet back them up is great, but like we've seen from Joe Ingles (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/i/inglejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) that vet can be a rookie in the NBA, but an experienced foreign player. That could be Raul Neto, who while he's only 23 years old, has played over 3k minutes over the last few years in Spain. Or you could keep Cotton around, as a great change up guard to the current roster.

I'd rather go with Exum, Burke, Hanlan, and one of Cotton or Neto as our four PGs on our 15 man roster than have to over pay for one of these available guys with dubious upside.

I'd rather put the best possible team together and win as much as possible than have guys on the floor that haven't earned it.

You're almost better off a) sliding down Trey Lyles (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lylestr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) for spot duty, or b) keeping both Millsap and Johnson -- at least until training camp. Or c) keeping a spot open for someone in the NBADL or falls off a team during waivers.

You're better off having proven players and making unproven players prove themselves. You have a D-league team. It's about time to use it finally!

Utah is anchored inside by Derrick Favors (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/favorde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (23) and Rudy Gobert (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/goberru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (23). Grant Jerrett (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jerregr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (22) is also on the team, but yeah, I have a hard enough time remembering he is here.

And I doubt he will be with Lyles around.

A bigger name, and ostensibly the 3rd big in the rotation, is Trevor Booker (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/booketr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) (27). Booker is a tweener who doesn't have the ball handling or three point shot to play any small forward; but his energy and physical play allows him to play at the four while being undersized.

Looked like to me he could play some 3.

He's not a defender though, and doesn't have the length to be a difference maker in the paint. If Utah could upgrade their bigman rotation they would be unstoppable. Assisting this is Booker's contract which has him making $4.775 million this year; but, only $0.250 is guaranteed. I think the Jazz do retain him because, man, looking at who is available -- it's hard to do better.

The Jazz also have Jack Cooley (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/cooleja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) on a similar non-guaranteed contract as Bryce Cotton, Elijah Millsap, and Chris Johnson are on. Though his days may be numbered if the Jazz do get an upgrade. And an upgrade could come from outside of the USA. Utah holds the rights to Ante Tomic (http://www.sbnation.com/nba/players/24650/ante-tomic) and Tibor Pleiss (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/pleisti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com). While Tomic has been discussed at length on this site, I've not written about Pleiss at all. He's a big guy. He has size. He also had an Andris Biedrins (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/biedran01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) type of professional breakdown last season. He's better than his numbers show and a change of scenery could help him. Compared to some of the bigmen still on the board, well, he could be like Booker, hard to do better than.

The guy is really skinny. Who knows if he can play in the league. Plenty of guys left better than Cooley and proven NBA talent.

LaMarcus Aldridge, David West (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/westda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Marc Gasol, Tim Duncan, DeAndre Jordan, Robin Lopez, Roy Hibbert, Josh Smith (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/smithjo03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Amar'e Stoudemire (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/stoudam01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Brandon Bass (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bassbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Kevin Garnett (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/garneke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Carlos Boozer (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/boozeca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), Kendrick Perkins (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/perkike01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), and Enes Kanter (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/k/kanteen01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com) aren't coming over. Davis and Scola are nice, if you can promise them the #3 spot in the bigman rotation. However, they both will be more expensive than needed.

How do you know? It would be worth quite a bit to get a # 3 or 4 big man and they might get a deal after everyone else blows their wad.

It would be hilarious to see stretch big Bargnani in Utah, but the Jazz are more likely to get Jason Smith. Personally, I like defense. So I like Mbah a Moute and Biyombo. I also am a sucker for crazy names, though. All in all, none of these guys would supplant Rudy or Derrick. And in reality, Trey Lyles could be better than most of them.
Bargnani could be pretty good as the 3 or 4 guy and stretch the floor. They have plenty of D. They need to get better offensively and I doubt Lyles is the guy yet.
.

Being in a rush to upgrade the roster is nice. But I totally see why Dennis Lindsey is not doing that. He doesn't need to look for quick fixes, because he's already made a really good team. The best talent still want an opportunity to play. And in Utah, for the most part, the guys you could be bringing in aren't likely to challenge for minutes.

Are you serious? Jazz need a back-up center. I liked what I saw from Cooley but he's not it! They haven't had an NBA caliber pg the past two seasons. Ingles didn't look like a rotation player until the end of the year. They need some vets. They don't need to get younger.

The opposite is also true, the players who are likely to challenge the established Jazz players for minutes aren't likely to be guys you can bring in as free agents. The one true UFA on the team, [B]Jeremy Evans (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/evansje01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.basketball-reference.com), is someone that you probably bring back for a two year deal if you can't find an upgrade. He brings depth and does a lot of off-the-court stuff.

The staff doesn't like him. Hard to see him being back.

It's not a sexy off-season for the Jazz. But it's a stable one, one you can build upon. It's not a summer fling. It's an arranged marriage. At times it's awkward, but has a very low divorce rate. Whatever DL does do, it will be something he does with the bigger picture in mind. I remember my one week as a GM where I made a lot of moves that looked bad, but ended up turning out to be okay. Lindsey is doing the opposite behavior with the similar result -- the Jazz are going to be okay, even if this summer it doesn't look like we're making waves.

OK isn't good enough at this point. Time to play with the big boys. I realize everyone loves tanking but Rudy has changed that. You either bench or get rid of your best player or you try to compete.

This is going to be a very good team. And that's why the Jazz front office don't have to run around this off-season like a chicken with its' head cut off. Sometimes being right and holding your ground will eventually be it's own reward. No Big Al. No Millsap on-again / off-again relationship. No quick fixes with vets. No mercenaries. Just development. Discipline. And Defense.
In Lindsey we trust.
Lindsey and the whole team outside Rudy, Maxi G, Favors, Hood, Burks, Booker, Ingles have a ton to prove still. Jazz sucked before Rudy. Great pick. Not enough though.

Shooting guard Alec Burks has been cleared for some contact as he continues to rehab from the shoulder surgery that prematurely ended his season. Burks will be involved in some of the Jazz's summer training, but won't participate in the summer league, as had been rumored.

http://www.sltrib.com/blogs/jazznotes/2698799-155/utah-jazz-blog-four-questions-as

2. Can Dante Exum dominate?

There were all sorts of ups and downs in the 19-year-old's rookie campaign. Exum proved himself to be a good defender, especially for his age and experience level. But he also looked extremely timid at times with the ball, failing to use his size and speed to attack the basket.
With a year of experience under his belt, Exum is expected to take a leap forward during his sophomore campaign. By all accounts, Exum has bulked up, improved his shooting and wants to showcase himself as a leader this summer.

Being the supposed starter he should. I don't expect but hopefully we see a lot more from him.

3. What wrinkles will we see?

Take a quick glance at the Jazz's summer roster and you'll notice a lack of traditional centers. That's apparently by design.

"Jack Cooley is a center with how we play," Lindsey said. "Even though he may not be 7-2, with the level of physicality [he has] he'll be able to control the glass, we feel like. And we're looking at some ideas on how we want to play both now and going forward. The roster is set up that way a little bit."

The Jazz coaches want to use the summer league to experiment a little bit, and will try some different looks with their flow offense.

"We're actually playing five guys out to have the floor spaced," said forward Grant Jerrett, who will play some center this summer. "Doing that this summer is going to benefit each player."

You'd think you'd want to get Jerrett and Lyles if he plays most of the minutes. Also have a former 1st rounder in the mix. Confirms my idea that with his length and size that Lyles could end up playing some center. Could keep Jerrett on the squad if one of them can.

[QUOTE]4. Can someone get an edge in point guard battle?

The Jazz's talks with Brazilian guard Raul Neto are ongoing. In the meantime, Bryce Cotton and rookie Olivier Hanlan are trying to use the summer to get a head start on the battle for the third point guard spot.
Cotton impressed the Jazz enough last year to earn a multi-year deal, but his contract is not guaranteed.

Hanlan, meanwhile, is quickly adjusting to the Jazz's system.
"I think Oliver's made some big jumps," assistant coach Alex Jensen said Sunday. "He's smart. Just offensively and defensively getting comfortable

http://www.sltrib.com/sports/2696952-155/nba-utah-jazz-summer-league-full

"Our guys have been working," Jazz head coach Quin Snyder said. "They've been in the gym and committed. It's good to see Dante and Rodney and these guys to come out and finally play some five-on-five and see a lot of those things — it's not immediate, it takes time — but some of those things do translate."

In three days this week — Monday, Tuesday and Thursday — fans at EnergySolutions Arena will get to see the first professional games of Jahlil Okafor — Philadelphia's first-round pick and No. 3 overall. Point guard Marcus Smart is expected to suit up for the Boston Celtics, and University of Utah fans will be reacquainted with former Arizona point guard T.J. McConnell, who became a loathed figure at the Huntsman Center over the past two seasons.

But a majority of the interest will focus on the Jazz. Has Exum made a leap? Is he shooting the ball better? Has he put time in the weight room?
What about Hood? What improvements has he made to his game? Can he be durable? And can he make the transition into a good scorer?
Utah's second-round pick — Olivier Hanlan — will play, and he's someone who will be given the opportunity to prove himself at point guard, as will Bryce Cotton, who played well for the Jazz in the second half of last season and is now trying to solidify his spot on the roster.
It was the last 4 games not the 2nd half. Again how do these guys get this job?

"It feels good to be back," Cotton said. "I had a nice offseason working out at my college, but it feels good to be back with the guys and just getting back to work." The Jazz will have to fit a number of guys into the rotation in the next few weeks. Cotton, Chris Johnson, Jack Cooley and Grant Jerrett are all holdovers from the roster from last year. Obviously, Exum and Hood project as mainstays going forward. Hanlan is someone the Jazz want to take a long look at, and Jared Cunningham was a first-round pick.

To alleviate the potential logjams, look for some players to be given days off. Look for some to switch between starting and backup roles as well. Summer league coach Alex Jensen said the team will have those conversations. But over a long two weeks, Utah will look to spread out the minutes and keep players fresh.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865632017/Utah-Jazz-Brazilian-point-guard-Raul-Neto-arrives-in-Utah.html

The delay worked for the Jazz, who wanted the young player to get more playing experience in a good hoops environment and also didn't want to have two young point guards (Trey Burke) on similar contract timelines.

Instead they'll have Hanlan and Neto on the same timeline. :facepalm

While Jazz management and coach Quin Snyder are quite high on Neto's potential, the 23-year-old will have to decide if he is willing to be third point guard on an NBA team to begin with or if he'd rather keep playing in Europe.

I'd guess he's their best pg right now. He's better offensively and a good defender.

Neto, whose father was a huge John Stockton fan, is currently a member of the CB Murcia basketball club in Spain's top league, Liga ACB. He also plays for Brazil's national team.

While in Orlando for the 2013 summer league, Neto told the Deseret News that it wasn't his choice about when to begin his NBA career.

"If I have to choose, I want to play NBA, but it's not my choice," he said. "I don't want to be here (with Jazz) and don't play. I want to play."

They've got a D-league team. Everyone can play.

Hill might make sense being Booker's cousin. Could play him at the 4 and 5. Bargnani at the right price might be a nice fit too.

Still some good ones here. Need a mentor that can still play some.

Smart out played Dante in the first but Dante took over after that. He was aggressive. Let's hope he keeps it up in the fall. He was bigger but he looked kind of fat to me. Sprained his ankle at the end.

Hood was a little off. Maybe from not practicing the past couple days. Cooley pounded the glass. Motum looked good. Johnson and Cotton played pretty well. Hanlan didn't show much. Jerrett hit a couple 3's but had his right shoulder dislocated. I'd guess he's done for the summer. Bad break for him. Good for Motom and Cooley.

Lots of guys there. Booker, Millsap, Burks, Rudy and Neto. Showed at halftime that they've been doing boxing workouts.

Then, with 1:50 left in the game, Exum injured his ankle while driving to the basket, and he had to be helped off the court. The injury was later announced as a sprained left ankle. Exum was later seen with a brace on his ankle, but he did not have crutches or a walking boot. He said he will be evaluated Tuesday (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/13212531/utah-jazz-guard-dante-exum-helped-court-sprained-left-ankle-summer-league-debut).
