Yes they are.
Both at the top of their brands (Adidas & Jordan) and both of them players in huge markets (Chicago & New York).
Being a superstar isn't just about being the best, it's about popularity. Rose and Melo are household names.
My 65 year old father that lives in New Jersey knows who Melo is but doesn't know who Curry is.

But Kobe literally sucks right now and Rose is a replacement-level guard.
You actually have to be good to be considered a superstar...not just a popular guy.
Melo is a slightly different story. Fully healthy and engaged Melo is a top 15-20 player, and he has the branding. I guess you could call him one.

Other way around. You have to be popular to be considered a superstar. How do people know what you can do if nobody knows you?
Just look at the word superstar. Super - STAR. Like Rockstar right? Rock - STAR.
Well let's say there's a band who is epic on the electric guitar and is just awesome, but nobody knows them. they play out of his parent's garage.
How are they rockstars?
You don't become a rockstar until you're discovered and start gaining fans. End of story.

Yes, definitely.
Just because Justin Bieber is a superstar doesn't mean he's amongst the most talented/best singers in the world. It just means he's one of the most popular singers in the world.
Usually, superstars come with success. In the case of Jeremy Lin, his success is relative to other Asian players that currently play in the NBA. China is such a powerhouse that they can elevate their most successful player to borderline superstardom despite his mediocrity.

Yes Melo and Rose are in the same tier as KD and Kobe atm.
Just look at the huge "The Return" campaign Adidas did for Rose. Would they do that for somebody who isn't a superstar?
Players get injured all the time. A LOT of players get injured. Rose gets a "The Return" campaign. Why? Because hes a superstar, hes super popular.
If you've seen my posts before, you will know i'm not very fond of Derrick Rose but then again thats another example of how big D.Rose is because every time i talk bad about him I have tons of his fans defending him.

You guys are creating your own terminology regarding NBA Superstars then, because Superstardom has to do with popularity and success, which usually comes hand in hand.
Jeremy Lin is a borderline superstar because of his popularity (China) and his relative success when compared to other Asian players. If he turned that relative success into just success in the NBA in general, he would probably make that push into actual Superstardom.
Ex. - We all can agree that Paul George pre-injury was talented enough to be considered a superstar. He didn't achieve that level of popularity though. If Jeremy Lin elevated his game to PG's level, with his appeal towards the Asian population, he would have become a Superstar. For now, he only partially fits the definition, so he's borderline.

Looks like someone has problems parsing words.
Here's a little hint: "and" and "or" mean 2 completely different things. It's nice that you know how to cut and paste from a dictionary. Too bad that's not the same thing as actually understanding.
"High profile" is logically ANDed with "highly successful" in the definition you posted. It is not "high profile" OR "highly successful". To dumb it down, the definition you pasted indicates that a superstar has BOTH the criteria of being "high profile" and "highly successful", not just one or the other.
If you still fail to understand, then your best bet is to pray that someday gene therapy that can fix Down's Syndrome becomes available.

Having achieved popularity,profit, or distinction.
POPULARITY: Check.
Derrick Rose and Carmelo Anthony are 2 of the most popular players in the NBA as proved by the FACTUAL evidence in the Jersey Sales chart i showed you.
PROFIT: Check.
Both players are endorsed by 2 of the biggest shoe companies in the world, and not only that but they are at the top of those brands. Both players having their own signature shoe, and Rose having his own signature line of clothing. Do I even need to pull out the numbers?
DISTINCTION: Check.
Derrick Rose, youngest MVP in the history of the NBA, Most explosive player in the league at one point, extremely marketable name, hometown kid, coming back from injury which gives him a nice story line.
Carmelo Anthony. Once marketed as LeBron's biggest rival. Gold Medalist. Leader of the team with the biggest market in the NBA (NEW YORK), one of the greatest and most talented scorers in the NBA. Led his team to the Western Conference Finals.
You know, it's getting silly how I literally have to give you the definitions of words like as if you were a third grader.

Okay, you just hold your superstars to a higher standard so the others don't fit in. Others may be more lenient.
What I don't understand is how Stephen Curry isn't considered a Superstar.
From the list posted earlier, he's #2 in jersey sales overall, the ASG leading vote-getter, likely-MVP, best player on the best team, and a Top 3 player (arguably).
He's a superstar in every sense of the word. Elite talent, extremely popular, extremely successful. Not many players in the history of the game have reached his level of success and popularity.

A true star's brand is made by itself, e.g. LeBron/Jordan/Shaq. These guys didn't need much marketing to become stars, people are already naturally interested in them.
LeBron James
Kevin Durant
Russell Westbrook
Chris Paul
James Harden
