What is your take on Tracy McGrady: the playoff performer?
Tracy McGrady gets a bad rep for never making it out of the first round in his prime, but was he really all that bad? Was he always the blame?
I've watched every series with T-Mac as a playoff performer.
2001 - Orl - 33.8 ppg | 8.3 ast | 6.5 reb | 1.8 stl | 1.3 blk
2002 - Orl - 30.8 ppg | 5.5 ast | 6.3 reb | .5 stl | 1.8 blk
2003 - Orl - 31.7 ppg | 4.7 ast | 6.7 reb | 2 stl | .9 blk
2005 - Hou - 30.7 ppg | 6.7 ast | 7.4 reb | 1.6 stl | 1.4 blk
2007 - Hou - 25.3 ppg | 7.3 ast | 5.9 reb | .7 stl | .9 blk
2008 - Hou - 27 ppg | 6.8 ast | 8.2 reb | 1.5 stl | .8 blk
Okay, he never got out of the first round in his prime/peak, but he easily did his part.
He had shitty luck and was on really bad teams during his best years. Never was on a team with a high seed either I think.

Great stats but if you never get out of the first round, there's just not a whole lot to remember unfortunately. I'd know, having seen my fair share of first round losses.

It's not like he shrinks in the playoffs. He actually plays better than the regular season.
If his numbers just totally dropped in the playoffs, I can see him having a bad rep. But he ups his numbers in the postseason.

Besides having Yao for two of those series, he didn't even get a decent performance from any other teammate

Rockets were stacked man.. if his prime was on those teams they would've done a lot better. Too bad he was only good for a few years on a shitty team.. prolly could've done more

Baron Davis has murdered MVPs and 1 seeds. No shame.

Meh. It's hard to get that hyped about a stat line when the stretch of games is no more than 3 to 7 games. Especially when T-Mac was part of 3 series' where his team held a 2 game lead and he lost all 3 of them.

That Hornets team was much better than the Magic.
Not only Davis but J.Mashburn who was an all-star a decent SG in David Wesley and Jamal Magloire. All better than Magics 2nd best player.

He could only do so much, couldn't get any help.
I remember it was one game where Mac and Yao score majority of the points and Battier and Rafer Alston were the only other Rockets to score. I think 2007.
2003 Orlando vs Pistons. He dominates going for 40+ in 2 or the Magics 3 wins to go up on Detroit 3-1. Eventually when you have Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton you're going to be victorious over an 8th seed overachieving Magic squad.
He is one of my favorite players ever, but they gave up a 3-1 lead to the Pistons, 2-0 lead to the Mavs, and 2-0 lead to the Jazz. Okay, maybe we can excuse him for what happened vs the Pistons. He had terrible teammates, and the Pistons were a great team that won a championship the next year. But the Mavs were nothing special. At least they had Dirk though and the Rockets didn't have HCA. The Jazz? They had nobody noteworthy today and the Rockets had HCA. Ultimately a disappointment. Sure, he shouldn't have gotten out of the first round more times then not. But come on, at least get out once. A lot of it is bad luck and he did have some great performances. But he was also inefficient at times and didn't always have the killer instinct needed.
Timmy D for MVP

If he and Yao had been able to stay healthy I think they would have changed the way things played out in the Western Conference.
