My guess of how this works is there was a great, great mass under intensive pressure.

As the pressure built some of it erupted, and there is now slightly less mass under slightly less pressure.

The lightning is pretty amazing too.

Yup, caused by the ash and rock formations that are being spit out I believe. Dirty thunderstorm.
