man defense isn't important unless you're going to turn the ball over 30 times

actually it's very important.... you have to be able to throw different looks...

Only when it comes to overrating guys like Magic and Bird so that they can excuse their lack of elite defense.

But all seriousness, I guess that's why you have the plus/minus stat or whatever. You add the offensive and defensive plus/minus and you'll get the result.

It's not the best stat since it does depend on how good your team is at times. But you can see the impact on the offense and defense. You can say Magic's offense is more important to his team than the defense of Cooper or whatever. You could also try to compare it to another player on another team, but still it depends on other factors as well.

Like Magic's OBPM in 1990 was 8.6. His DBPM was 1.0 and his total BPM is 9.5. This was his best. Pippen's best was 8.3 in 1994. His OBPM was 4.5 and his DBPM was 3.8. But this doesn't mean player a or player b was better at either offense or defense. It just means how much the team relied on you in that specific category. But it does indicate that sometimes that your offense could be sooooo good that your defense don't matter to impact the game favorably to your team. And vice versa.

You should say lock down man defense. As in the ability to make someone's life tough beyond just being there. Being there to me is more team defense.

When people talk about man D they are talking about guys like Leonard or Bradley or dude on Cs who made LeBron cough the ball backcourt.

It's good, but I don't think you need that from every position. It's nice to have someone who can do it, but beyond that, having solid 'team D' is also important.

I think you can have a guy like Magic or Bird who isn't a great defender and have them on a team with someone like Cooper or DJ, and have it be fine.

The important thing is to understand the situation. I think if you leave someone wide open under the hoop that's a fault of team D as much as man D. That's general awareness.

Infact, if you look at the Bull's play, everyone is pumped up to play "man D" and thus paying no attention to team D and also getting beat backdoor by over-compensating.
