Knowing nothing else about the rest of your team which player would you take:

Player A
Position: Same as Player B
Defense: Elite
Offense: Below Average

Player B
Position: Same as Player A
Defense: Below Average
Offense: Elite

For the sake of the debate I figured I'd leave the position unknown (only thing known is that they are the same position), knowing the position may influence the results in a way that I do not want.

Who do you like and why?

Hahaha this isn't a comparison of any two specific players, just curious as to who people would choose.

Well, let's say Player B is Magic Johnson.

Regardless of defense, I'd take him over any point guard ever, over most SG's ever, probably over Bird, over any PF ever, and over at least 90% of any center that's ever lived.

Magic didn't just "play all positions" - he was MAGIC at every position - the only player that was an elite passer from every position.

Btw, regarding defense - look at the GIF above - that's an example of today's spaced out game with the hand-check ban, which allows penetration to be an automatic, built-in component of the game.

The NBA has confirmed this - they officially stated that the 2005 rule changes (specifically the hand-check ban and defensive 3 seconds) had achieved their objective of increasing penetration (link below).. This is from the source and creator of the new rules, so it's not subjective opinion, similar to how Bill Gates vision for Microsoft was never considered subjective opinion: http://www.nba.com/2009/news/feature...son/index.html

In today's game, the spacing and hands-off approach to defense makes defending penetration a TEAM effort - gone are the days where a guy like Gary Payton or Mookie Blaylock was expected to significantly reduce PG penetration.. There isn't anyone in today's game that stops PG penetration or is even EXPECTED to - the notion of stopping penetration is an old-school notion.

Regardless of defense, I'd take him over any point guard ever, right behind MJ at SG, probably over Bird, over any PF ever, and over at least 90% of any center that's ever lived.

It all depends on what is the rest of the team. If I'm starting a team I would take let's say Carmelo before Tony Allen.

If their salaries are equal I would take the offensive player.

I wouldn't be able to make a choice unless I knew which positions they played, ha.

If both players are 1/2/3 men I'd pick Player B nine out of ten times. Wing players are easier to hide on defense. It's also prudent to note that all great teams in this era generally have a dynamic back-court player.

If both players are 4/5 men, Player A quite easily gets my vote.
