Duncan is 39 and Parker is fat and tired.. who else? danny green got cut. patty got cut. rest are roleplayers. and he still beat (and outplayed) lebron on the biggest stage.

yea the system is good.. but REALITY CHECK HATERS: NO SYSTEM IS THAT GOOD

it comes down to the players, and Kawhi is the best player on the end-tail of the greatest dynasty in the history of sports.

The current , and unanimously deserving (by basketball purists) DMVP.. and currently playing like a real MVP in the playoffs , does it on BOTH ENDS

sorry, but a coach cant teach you how to play 1on1 defense. its innate. and its driven by the hunger to be GREAT.

Leonard top 5 player

What does Duncan's age have to do with anything?

Duncan still plays great defense plus he is averaging 17.5-10 so wtf are you talking about?

The system in which he's playing is worth more than a superstar.

The most important person in Spurs is Pop (the unique exception in NBA). Any other coach wont even make Playoffs with Spurs in the West.

Kiwi is the most important player, but Pop's impact is greater than his.

Carlisle, Budenholzer, and Thibodeau would.

There could be other coaches out there as well, but those 3 definitely would.

Duncan is a super star of the past (and perpetually shows why)

Manu and Parker were both AS's in their own right and still show flashes of it

Diaw could be starting on most teams, same for Belinelli (who was a positive influence for the Bulls before he left)

Mills is instant offense and will probably land a decent contract in the future.

Kawhi is arguably the best player on the Spurs, but he's not surrounded by past their prime Dalembert, Troy Murphy, Jumaine Jones, and Marcus Banks... players who didn't amount to much (make AS games, All-NBA teams, etc).

he's surrounded by former AS's and excellent role players (would be starters). and they have the best coaching staff in the league.

But Kawhi is awesome... overrated by some, certainly, but underrated by many... I'm glad he'll stick with the Spurs, but that's kind of conditional and being able to surround him with great players (I don't see him in the vain of a Lebron or KD, but not many tiers below that). if he's friendly to the Spurs negotiations and willing to be a team player (ie. share the wealth), SA should be good.

Not really, remember - no Pops system and maximization of talents of players who were rejects elsewhere. Ancient Timmy would be misused, Kiwi wouldnt be developed to superstar either.

Speaking of hypotheticals we arent just swapping coaches, Spurs were build from ground up by Pop, w/o him we also should remove what he achieved. Carlisle, Bud and Thibs are nowhere near as good as Pop in building such team as Spurs from the players it have.

what I'm saying is... if you're going to have veterans in their 30's, which many champion teams have had... might as well have veterans like J Kidd and Marion (11 Mavs)... Payton and Mourning (06 heat)... etc. ... players who were/are awesome yet are in the latter stages of their career.

and as far as Diaw, maybe that's an overstatement but the point is, if he's in the playing-shape he's in now and being as productive, he could be serviceable to a number of contending or non-contending teams.

Basically, alot of the greatness that Duncan, Manu, and Parker have is not all dependent on elite athleticism, they're generally (not always) clutch, experienced, savvy players who can shoot and pass well. and understand the defensive tenets. So yeah they may be old and really imperfect but they're still valuable.
