monty python once made an excellent movie called "the life of brian," mocking the roman - semitic - prechristian period of jesus' time.

predictably lots of religious nuts were very upset, but when the dust had settled and church leaders actually watched the movie, a lot of them found the movie to be faithful and respectful of christianity and the time period... and of course, relentlessly hilarious.
