I don't know about best brands/designers but make sure your clothes fit well. Definitely don't buy shirts too big, you'll look silly.

Look at this (http://www.gq.com/style/suit-guide/200701/fitted-dress-shirts-slideshow) for guidance.

I'm not built like a tank either, 5'11 170. But I bought a suit recently, this is how it should fit.

"Formal" means tux for guys. I think you're talking about business attire.

I was just going to complain how difficult it is to find dress shirts for guys with muscular upper bodies, but I might come off as a douche. It really is though, if you're not skinny, you need to get a tailored shirt and pay more. Dress shirts are so damn tight around the neck and arms. I just paid a grand for two nice tailored suits and shirts and I'm done. Luckily, my office is casual, I'm wearing a quick dry gym shirt today because its a hot day.

the most affordable/best is perhaps Zaras. Although they do have some clothes that are very metro/gay/hipster.

Express is okay, but more of what you'd wear to a club (perfect if that's what you're going for).

If you're going to Macy's, Kenneth Cole is usually a sure bet.

The jacket seems to be most of the cost. Ties around $30-50, pants around $60-100, shirts are $40-70, shoes are $60-120. So let's say you get 4 shirts, 2 ties, and 2 pants:

Cost between
2(30)+2(60)+4(40)+60= $400 OR
2(50)+2(100)+4(70)+120= $700

You could go much much cheaper with bargains and deals, but beware. I've bought dress shirts that are regular $90 and marked down to $15 or $20, so you're thinking wow a great deal! But no, that shirt is flawed or counterfeit and will fall apart quickly. Pants are whatever though, get those cheap if possible. Just make sure your shirts are quality.

Thanks. I figured those would be the prices. Express has 3 for $99 shirts. Should I pull the trigger and get it or that's common for express?

I'm fearful about pants. I want something slim straight not too baggy.

****ing ties are so expensive.

Edit: what shoes should I wear with the pants? Would any shoes do justice? Or is this something people are picky on? Color matching? Black dress pants with black dress shoes? Or can I mix and match?

When it comes to style, people doubt the existence of mine. I think I'm stylish, but I've been told otherwise. My go to suit is grey with a blue teal dress shirt, matching tie, black shoes. Apparently grey suits are a faux pas, but I like them.

You ain't a cowboy who's going to wear jeans, you can't wear formal black pants (assuming you're getting this) with brown shoes imo.

The black one is tooooo formal also.

Go to a more traditional store, they should have more to choose from... places like Brooks Brothers have more options for sizing

Not black or muslim for starters... and if we're talking about who everyone is from this thread i've already gathered youve been here for nearly a decade yet no one gives a shit about you or what you have to say

And going back to OP, my best suits have come from nordstromes rack... get some quality 1-2k suits for half off.

Suits come in very different styles and it's really up to your taste to choose what you like.

But, if you want a CLASSIC elegant style (say, for an important event), well you should be careful about some things, regardless of your taste.

A bit of advice from Italy:

- Avoid white-collared shirts unless they're actually white shirts. I know they're quite common in business attire in the US. This doesn't change that they're not ok for an elegant occasion. Shirt should be either completely white or completely light blue. Full stop.

- Shoes and belt should have matching colors. And this color should be either black or dark brown (and the latter not in the evening).

- And while we're at it, no brown shoes/belt if your suit is blue, unless it's very, very dark.

- Socks: always long and they should match either the suit color or the shoe color. NB Dark blue and black do not match.

- The most difficult part is how your jacket fits on the back of your neck. A suit might be nice, but if that part stays too high and does not rest perfectly on your shirt, it will show it's cheap and poorly chosen.

- Appropriate sleeve length for both shirt and jacket is also essential. If the jacket sleeve covers the shirt's one, it's bad. If the shirt's sleeve sticks out too much, it's bad.
Also, if you're wearing a watch: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/b2/01/93/b2019383100c99f7b4e8c5b5b41c3eef.jpg (left: ok; right: not ok)

- There are many collar styles and tie-knot styles. Try to match them appropriately. And btw, never wear a tie with a button-down shirt.

- The tip of your tie should barely reach the belt. It's ok if it's slightly higher, not ok if it's lower.

- If you wear a waistcoat, leave the bottom button undone.

True that.
If your jacket has 3 buttons (which is also ok), then you can button up the two top ones, or the central one alone.

I was talking about a classic eveningwear look there.

EDIT - I have looked this up and found out that it's typical in the US to wear button-downs with ties even in a formal outfit.
Fine with me then.
In Europe it would be considered... well, what it actually is... a very American thing :D

It comes from prep school uniforms and the style is carried over to college, especially the Ivys. I agree that it's a more casual look.
