.
Here is the "Jordan Hop-Step" - only MJ used this particular type of hop-step (where he sneaks in a step right before the jumpstop) - it allows the player to take one LESS dribble on the way to the rim:

The only other player that does it is Gerald Green:..:confusedshrug:

The proprietary hop-step above isn't the first thing MJ invented - he also invented the MJ Lean-In (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10823586&postcount=49).. But with the lean-in, everyone has copied him, whereas only MJ and Green use this specific hop-step.
Both are GOAT NAVIGATION EFFICIENCY (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=360900)

It's never called obviously, but I wonder why it doesn't count as a travel. How is this different from third step except that it's of two feet as a third step instead of one ? Skilled move nevertheless.

Players like LeBron and Paul Pierce were doing this a few years ago before they starting calling the travel.
Once they started calling that move a travel on LeBron, nobody else can get away with it either.

Players did use to do it, but then they started calling it a travel. I myself used to do it on the playground, but they called it a travel every time I did it during high school games (even when I went out of my way to not do the initial shuffle).
In the Jordan one he establishes a pivot foot and then lifts it (which is a travel). If he does it without establishing a pivot (like Pippen was able to) then it's all good. Pippen would do a two foot jump stop basically, as opposed to Jordan who did a one foot step to a two foot jump stop.
Basically Pippen (and now Wiggins from what I've seen) are two of the few who do it correctly and without traveling. Jordan damn near traveled every time he did it. Kobe did it a few times correctly, but his speed to jump ratio was much worse. I think he slammed on Divac using it once.

I can't believe Jordan was allowed to travel HIS ASS OFF back then. Weak ass era.

little less noticeable travel.. but still better than MJ's.
.. Kobe's jumpstop is like everyone's, whereas the MJ hop-step is proprietary - no one else does it:

That looks like traveling to me. To me, when you hop step, you have to jump once you gather. What MJ did was gather, take one step and then jump. That right step before the jump is his 3rd step. Not saying all of his gifs are traveling but some look like it.

Nice travels. There is a reason only he was able to do it.
