Why all of a sudden we have this bitching about playoff seeding?

Just because the defending champions dropped significantly on the last game of the NBA regular season? Prior to this season, there was never this much uproar about it. Maybe it's just knee-jerk media propaganda.

The format is fine, the Spurs' seeding was an anomaly.

Um, no. There has been much uproar for the past 2-3 seasons now.

It's been bad since the turn of the ccentury with 08/09 the lone exception.

The only uproar I've personally seen is the opinion that it should be top 16 teams in the playoffs, not conference exclusively 8 vs 8. Is that what you're referring too? If so, I can see the benefits of both changing it to top 16 and keeping it as is. The benefits of changing it are that you reward more teams for playing better while adding more diversity to the playoffs. Better battles between teams in other words. The negative side is that it opens up the door for teams who are, for the most part, worthless and/or useless, to be contracted out. Dispersing the players of said teams throughout the rest of the league. Specifically in the Eastern conference.

It should be division winners = automatic playoff berth and the remaining 4 seeds are determined according to record.

I haven't seen any Spurs person complain about how the Spurs got seeded, before or after the series.

It gets talked about East and West because better teams are missing out and undeserving teams are getting a shot.
