Just watched these documentaries on this family the past two days and HOLY SHIT :biggums:

They've been posted about on ISH before (protesting Trailblazers game, etc) but I didn't see a thread where all the good documentaries on them were posted. Freaky how 50 people like that can be brainwashed so thoroughly by the preaching of one old man (their grandfather/father)

Well they don't blow people up or shoot them. Obviously they're scum and hurting people in other ways, but essentially, they're harmless.

Watching the first documentary, it's pretty funny seeing how furious everyone gets at the picketing family. Seeing random people get furious in their vehicles.

Physically.

But they're horrible, hurtful people emotionally. If you've ever attended a young soldiers funeral for example, you can sort of connect the dots how horrible it would be to have those assholes picketing a hundred yards away shouting vile things at your family and about your sibling/son/daughter that got killed (they research personal information on the people who got killed to make their insults personal).

if those guys tried to pull shit at my sons funeral I would catch a case and it would be well worth it

I don't know how the families keep their cool. It'd be far too tempting to cross the street and physically assault them all. Especially when you're already grieving and angry at the world for losing a loved one.

Can they really earn money with these tactics?

They were going to picket the Sandy Hook Elementary School

I don't know if they ever got there but I mean, damn.

A few of the kids who were able to escape the brainwashing have said in interviews the family/church would pray for specific people to die.

They do get lawsuit money when people assault them but my understanding is that's not where they depend on their income. According to those documentaries/wiki all the members (about 40 or 50 people) are required to dedicate 10% of their income to the Church. And these people aren't McDonald's workers, it's actually a family of lawyers. The "church" spends over $200,000 a year on plane tickets alone, and another $50,000 on other miscellaneous picketing expenses. Plus who knows what else on actually keeping their church expenses up, social media, making signs, etc. They seem pretty well off financially.

You know your fvcked up when the Hell's Angels show up to block your ass from causing trouble. The authorities are helpless to stop them. Sometimes it seems like we have too much freedom in this country.

Great documentary. There's also a part 2 of "The Most Hated Family in America"

Louis Theroux does good work. Can't wait for his documentary on scientology to come out

I highly recommend getting a torrent pack with all of his docs. I've watched all of his docs and they are great. There's a good one where he talks to crystal meth addicts. Some other good ones are about pedophiles, black nationalists, white supremacists, body builders, terrorism in africa, violence in philly, thai brides, etc.

Shirley Phelps-Roper used to call in to the Ron & Fez radio show occasionally for whatever reason, and the woman is just bizarre.

Been on a Louis Theroux documentary binge now after the Baptist Church stuff. Saw demo derby's, prisons, wrestling, white supremists etc. None of that shit is all that new/weird/shocking to me though the prisons seemed kind of dreadful.

I just ran into his UFO doc. 2 minutes in I instantly want to turn it off. I could not believe a bunch of people dress like that and get all militant about aliens that don't exist, and dupe outsiders into funding their bullshit. At least the baptist church is universally hated and only gets its funds internally. These militant anti-alien frauds somehow seems worse. I think it's because I hate the idea that they swindle people. Though maybe they are sociopaths and actually believe that shit... which irritates me even more :facepalm

*EDIT* Okay it looks like it's just 2 people and they seem totally harmless/friendly but just complete lunatics, I doubt many people buy their stuff so I feel at ease now :oldlol:

I don't think the church is even run by the Phelps family anymore. Two of Crazy Fred's sons and a few of his grandchildren who don't associate with the WBC have all stated that Fred himself was excommunicated because he had a massive change of heart regarding his fierce anti-homosexual stance before his death, even going so far as to visit the Equality House across the road from the WBC (a rainbow-painted house owned by some activist group intended to essentially troll the Phelpses) to speak with some of the workers there. Some of his sons/sons-in-law freaked the hell out and ended up hiding him in hospice until he croaked because of that.

Shirley and Margie are the two daughters of his (both of whom might be the ugliest women ever conceived) who stood to take over but both have been shunted to the sidelines in some kind of family squabble.

Crazy group, that one.
