View Full Version : Why is the MLB so accepting of fights and confrontation but not the NBA

I mean look at this, their youtube channel even has a PLAYLIST of baseball brawls, meanwhile basketball players can't even step off the bench without the world ending.

Baseball, football, hockey and soccer all seem perfectly fine with letting their players show some emotion towards the opposing team, why is basketball so soft when compared to them?

White people fighting is just "boys being boys". Black people fighting scares the predominantly white audience.
Some how the narrative got changed from players fighting in the nba. It use to be that it was just apart of the game.
Now they will be labeled thugs and eviscerated by the media. Maybe it was the iverson era or the malice in the palace.

because Basketball is trying the hardest to be the most liberal out of all those other sports.
that and we don't need another malice in the palace situation, remember basketball fans are right in front of the action.

This.
White people fighting is just "boys being boys". Black people fighting scares the predominantly white audience.
And this.
In hockey and baseball, it's considered part of the game. In basketball, it's frowned upon, like it's the worst thing in the history of mankind.
The first two leagues are majority white, while the NBA is majority black.
You can do the math.

2 words: Rudy Tomjanovich
Thing is, the Rudy Tomjanovich thing happened in 1977. There were still plenty of good NBA fights after that. Stern tripping over the Malice at the Palace is what got us to where we are today, with NBA players getting suspended even if they move 5 feet away from the bench if a fight starts.

Funny thing that--there were worse fights than that back in the day. When the league was majority white, they had no problem with players fighting right in front of the fans.

Because the NBA is the classiest organization our eyes have ever seen. They have proved to be an example for all.

You do the math. Baseball is majority Dominican and Latin American. Don't spit stuff out as fact if you don't know what you are talking about.
Football and hockey players have pads And helmets. NBA players are more physically dominant than baseball players so much more damage can be caused; not to mention fans being right on top of the action. Plus, MLB players get suspended just the same if they actually do fight. That KC Royals player got suspended 2 games just for swinging. Jr Smith, a repeat offender, got 2 games for connecting on a punch. Get outta here with this bitchIng about fighting in sports.
I can't say it surprises me the race card is getting thrown into this discussion, even though it has no business being here.

Baseball is mostly Latin American? Really, dumbass?
Football is mostly black, and fighting in the NFL is about as frowned upon as it is in the NBA. But in whiter sports, it's considered part of the game.
And you say the race card is being thrown into this? Man, GTFO. Assholes in denial about racism ALWAYS fall back on that bullshit.

Obviously I was mistaken on the race in baseball..my point still stands.
It has nothing to do with race. fighting is frowned upon just the same in baseball as it is basketball and football. Everyone involved in fights are suspended multiple games every time. How many times do you see basketball players shoving each other only to get a technical? When you swing in any sport, other than hockey, you are getting kicked out of the game, suspended, and/or fined. Basketball baseball and football are no different Other than your apparent perception. The athletes are all treated the same.
I'm not in denial about racism. It's unfortunately alive and well. I am however against bitches using the race card to try to push an agenda. Fighting in sports is frowned upon, period. Outside of hocker at least.

Hockey needs fights because it's slow otherwise.
Same thing for baseball.
There's more fights in football because it's more physical. The fights suck though since they are wearing pads and helmets.
Because baseball fights begin and end on the field.
If the NBA fought like that, they'd be assassinating each other days later.
Remember Arenas? Did he not pull a gun on a teammate in the locker room? You think if he got hit in the mouth he'd let it go after the game was over.
That's why the NBA doesn't condone fighting, just the the NFL doesn't.
Two different races, kinda, but really two different cultures is the difference.

The thing is, athletes in other sports tend to know when to stop. A lot of NBA players come from a background where they would just keep stomping a dude lifeless.
You can complain and call it racism but thats just the way it is. Guys fighting in baseball coming from upper middle class suburban backgrounds are usually just fighting to settle a dispute. Dudes on the NBA court would be unleashing some serious anger issues and thats when things can turn ugly. Plus, to a degree youre right. Seeing scowling black men, arms bare, raging, swinging, and shouting expletives 20 feet from the audience, has a different effect on people than Cal Ripken wrestle-fighting Eric Gagne on a mound thats 400 feet from the seats.

I think the bad boy Pistons and the 90s Knicks got us where we are. Knicks had a huge bench clearing brawl against the Suns I believe, and they had fights on the regular against the Heat, Pacers, Bulls in their respective playoff series. I know that stepping off the bench actually cost the Knicks a playoff series as they suspended Ewing. Imagine if Jordan left the bench in a brawl... I wonder how far they would have gone to preventing MJ being suspended a game for a stupid technicality :oldlol:
Dammit 90s Knicks...why you do this to us :hammerhead: Still miss those bastards :(

Pretty much. In Hockey, the refs will watch two guy wailing on each other like they're spectators at a boxing match :lol
Worst that will happen is one or both of the players get 5 minutes in the penalty box. If an NBA player accidentally hits another player, he's suspended for several games, gets a big fine, and of course is labeled a no good dirty thug.
The Malice at the Palace was the point of no return. The NBA has been very sensitive, overly sensitive about any 'thugish' image of the NBA to the point that they've outlawed emotion from the game.

Because the fans are much more closer to the action in a basketball venue. There is more of a threat.

The" closer to the crowd" argument is nonsense. Baseball players consistently go into the crowd for foul balls, and we've seen multiple fights, just in the past couple years, that have spilled into the stands. We've even had a couple incidents over the past few years where players and fans attacked each other. Yet entire dugouts of players still pile onto baseball fields for melee's on a weekly basis.

Who cares about fighting anyway? If i wanted to watch people beating each other i'd be a MMA fan or whatever these things are called.I watch NBA players for their basketball skills i couldnt care less about how well they fight. To me the fact that MLB or NHL promotes fighting is an admission that their product sucks so they resort to girly fights to create some buzz.
