View Full Version : Lakers Could Be $30 Million Under The Salary Cap Next Season

Discussion about Kevin Love in another thread got me thinking about the situation the Lakers could be in next season. This all, of course, assumes that they decline Jordan Hill's 9M team option and Ed Davis opts out of his 1.1M option, both of which are sure bets. The salary cap for the 2015-16 season is projected to be around $66.3 million.

Kobe Bryant: $25,000,000
Nick Young: $5,219,169 (who can we trade him to? :oldlol: :facepalm)
Julius Randle: $3,132,240
Ryan Kelly: $1,724,250
Robert Sacre: $981,358 (team option, likely to be exercised)
Jordan Clarkson: $845,059 (team option, def going to be picked up)
Jabari Brown: $845,059 (who? team option)
Vander Blue: $1,147,276 (who? RFA)

Total for 2015-16: $36,176,261

Now, we all know about the possibility of Love and Rondo to the Lakers. However, I read a story today about how the Lakers are targeting DeMarre Carroll in free agency. He would be a great 3&D player for the right price.

I'm no cap expert, so I think the only way they could get Love, Rondo and Carroll at their expected salaries is to do some sign and trades, since they don't have the Bird rights to any of those players. It seems complicated with lots of cap gymnastics involved, but I think it would be a great start to the rebuilding process.

Rondo
Kobe
Carroll
Love
??? (resign Ed Davis? Draft pick?)

Randle, Clarkson and Young off the bench (or hopefully trade Young but yeah right his contract is awful :oldlol:)

You can swap LMA for Love, though I highly doubt someone like a Marc Gasol is going to leave Memphis.

Anyway, looks good to me! :kobe:

I like Carroll for the right price but hopefully Lakers will not overpay just to get him. Teams that overpay guys usually ended up with regretting it. I would get Love and a defensive anchor and see what Clarkson can do then go all in for 2016.

get in the playoffs as a 7th-8th seed and give Kobe Bryant a fairwell playoff series, maybe make it to the second round.

sign Westbrook in 2016

The thing about overpaying now is that it will matter less with the salary cap set to explode after next season. I highly doubt Carroll will demand a max contract, so it should be all right if the Lakers have to overpay a bit to sign some quality talent.

Just ignore the LeBeta stans and trolls. This is a real thread discussing basketball, not slobbering over their bald 2*/5 idol.

I forgot that GOATbrook can opt out one season earlier than Durant.

That will all depend on how well Billy Donovan does in his first year as an NBA coach. No pressure on OKC or anything. :lol

And I have a feeling that if the Lakers rebuilt right, that Kobe could come back for a few more seasons because he didn't look nearly done when he played last season. Certainly not at $25M a year though. :kobe:

Not to the magnitude of Parson or Batum though. He's a role player who can thrive on certain system. I am just not comfortable overpaying guys when you have not established a system yet.

Lakers need something. We can't keep trotting out bums; it's disgraceful. $5M-$8M would be fine. $10M+ would probably be too much.

More like 20M. A top 5 pick, 27 and 34 should get us around 10 M in salaries.
So in FA we are talking about 1 max and a lot of fillers or one good player and some good pick ups.

Really? That line up looks good to you? That would the worst starting backcourt in the league and so is the front court besides Love, who is not going to the Lakers anyway.

Forgot about draft picks, hoping of course that we get to keep our lottery pick.

I'm guessing there is no way to delay signing a draft pick like in the NFL until after free agency. :(
