Your math is a little off. If $500k = $50 then 180m = 18k. People making only 18k over a span of 10+ years can't afford $50 watches, nevermind a roof over their head or food on the table.

Reasons to buy a watch in 2015 of our Lord Godbe:

3. Smartwatches, assuming the iWatch delivers (which will motivate the other companies to do better).

If he really bought a 500k watch he's going to go broke and lose it and everything else he owns as soon as he retires from the NBA.

No job he can ever find in the world post-NBA can sustain and maintain the goods he's purchasing and that kind of lifestyle he's currently living if he's buying 500k watches.

Earn big, spend big only works if you earn big your entire lifetime. Melo will be job searching in about 4 or 5 years. Liquidating his assets in 6.

Must be a Patek Philippe to be that expensive. Also stating him spending $500k on a watch is like a standard person spending $200 on a watch are unbelievable ignorant. You can work at McDonalds and make enough money in a week to buy a $200 watch. Additionally, you can easily run through 100 million in 10 years buying shit like $500k watches. Let's say the guy goes broke, you think he wouldn't look back on doing dumb shit like this with deep regret? Although if it's a Philippe the resell value is excellent and some go up in value over time

Love how people are treating this purchase like buying a car

Buying a car = instant loss of $ when you drive off the lot

Buying a watch = investment

If the watch is not completely trashed he easily will get 400K or more. More than likely he will get what he paid for it

That being said there are much nicer watches at this price point

knickballer

$500,000+ is like $50 to him

If we assume his pre-tax income is something around $30mil then that watch was around 2% of his yearly income.

In comparison, a person who makes $80k pre tax income were to spend 2% of their income on a watch it would be $1,600.

It's still a very large sum to pay and I think it's safe to assume that Carmelo is lavish spender in general.

Bill Gates wouldn't even show off what he has. The difference between millionaire athletes and billionaire businessmen is a huge gap. Although I don't think that was a smart investment, let's not act like there isn't anymore purchases like this he's probably made. He obviously makes enough salary wise and with endorsements to live like that. Is his chances higher to going broke? Sure. But there are other stupid purchases people make that the public don't know about.

I'll use Mayweather as an example. Bill Gates would make him look like a dumpster baby. He could wipe his ass with every dollar Mayweather has ever earned. Yet he has about $20-25 million in cars alone.

And that will all be gone in about 5 years.

Then what what will he do with all the shit he's collecting?

Many people think playing in the NBA makes you set for life or w/e... it does, only if you spend your 10's of millions on an annual budget like an upper-middle class person for the rest of your life and stretch that money out to last you and your family until you are 70, 80 or 90 years old.

If you spend big, you will be dependent on big-time checks and your gonna lose that money just as fast as you earned it if those checks ever stop coming, I wonder what Melo's plan is to continue receiving huge paychecks for the rest of his life after he's not getting paid anymore by the NBA in about 5 years.

Here's the deal, Carmelo is a partner in Haute Time -- a luxury lifestyle website/magazine ... and last night, he organized an event for 15 ultra-wealthy collectors to check out and try on some exclusive Greubel Forsey pieces.

You're missing the point. Anyone can get a job making $8-11 per hour and recover the $600 they spent on that belt in less than a month. What kind of a job is Carmelo Anthony going to get once he's out of the NBA that could allow him to recoup the $600,000 he spent on a watch.
Don't judge. You don't know what he's doing in his personal life

You guys are insane. He can easily afford a Maclean, the watch and whatever else he wants easily.

If he goes broke in 20 years it's not because of this watch.

if i could, i'd put 100% of my shit on vegas that it would happen. :oldlol:
Nope, if you look at his net worth, it's really high, higher than what he's earned. And his wife has money, and he has businesses that aren't eating cash, rather they are self sustaining. So even more cash coming in.

He might as well buy a nice watch to wear because he will never have a nice NBA championship ring to wear.

I'm sure not winning a ring will hurt him.

wow, looks like we know whos going to be broke in 10 years. for all those that is saying melo wont go broke because of this watch, that is only to the extent that one assumes that this watch is an anomaly in his purchase tendency. I mean look at Allen Iverson, look at mike tyson, those guys are broke (AI would be had he not set up that fund). its not about this watch, its about what he does with his money in general, and buying a freaking half a million dollar watch is vastly different from buying a 20k LV bag.

They are not winning in the eyes of other NBA players who have won, and that's what matters.

The watch costs ~2.5% of his yearly income. People are making a mountain out of a molehill. It's like saying a person that makes $100k/year is gonna go broke for buying a $2,500 watch.

It's already a collectible IMO so he won't lose much on it, I'd say he could add more value to it if he wore it while receiving silverware, but we all know it's not going to happen.

Dude, you're missing the point. Melo could've bought 2 fancy two story houses for the price of that butt-ugly watch.

You do realize he has another 30-50 years to live once he's done with the NBA, right? He will have virtually no income once he retires from the league, money dries up quickly when you have no source of income.
Did Carmelo tell you that he's not investing his money?

Love how people are treating this purchase like buying a car

Buying a car = instant loss of $ when you drive off the lot

Buying a watch = investment

If the watch is not completely trashed he easily will get 400K or more. More than likely he will get what he paid for it

That being said there are much nicer watches at this price point
Wow, we have an expert on watches costing over $500k! Can you post your reviews (or first-hand experience) of the top ten watches in the $500k to $1m range? Please give details about quality, functionality, durability, resell, and what sort of personality each watch fits. This is something I've been needing some guidance on. It's not often you meet someone who knows about products at this price point, let alone watches specifically. Thank you for registering on these forums.

To be fair, the difference is that the guy making $100k working a corporate job can work that job until he's 70-75 if he needs/wants to. However, Carmelo probably won't be in the NBA 8 years from now.

He spent roughly like 3% of his salary on a watch. Yeah, if I thought about spending 3% of my salary on a watch, I'd say that's too much.

I live in NYC and was just visiting my friend in Knob Hill for a week last year. The actual Bay Area and NYC area covers a large span of area. There are tons of areas in Richmond and Oakland, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, and even certain neighborhoods in Manhattan and SF that you can purchase an apartment for $565k.

Exactly.. this type of thing he can sell in a few years for more than he paid for it..

it's not like he's going to wear the thing to change the oil on his car :lol

it's a better investment than most new cars would be..

No luxury watches ever sell for more than their original brand-new-in-box value. Watches are not an investment.

At least a lot of his other watches don't look like complete shit. Youtube him and his watch collection and you'll see that he's got a lot of decent looking ones, albeit they're all Swiss. If he had any sense of true appreciation for fine craftsmanship, he'd have gotten at least some high end watches from Credor or Seiko Gallante. Japanese watches have far superior finish and polish on their watches than anything the Swiss put out, in addition to higher precision movements.

What about the watch that I had custom made for me at the foot of the Alps by a retired Swiss watch maker? It's not just some watch that you can call up a manufacturer and say hey, can I get this model? I wanted something that no one else had, and I got exactly that.
