View Full Version : Do you mind that certain rules are not always enforced?

Things that dont have huge impact on the game like travelling in the backcourt/on a breakaway fast break dunk, carrying while brining up the court? What about david's blatt violation?

I don't care as long as its consistent

If it is not going to be called, don't have it be a rule?

Or make some sort of "bylaw".

Just muddles the line between "illegal" and "not allowed" and makes the officials jobs even harder.

If things were always enforced to the letter of the law, they would be consistent.

If they called every little things off and on ball, the games would take more than 3.5 hours.
It would be boring as ****.

Unless the rules were tinkered with.

But I play basketball, as I'm sure 75% of the population on ISH does, and it's not that hard to...
run a fast break without traveling
dribble without palming
dribble the ball rather than travel
set a screen without moving with the defender

Call all of these, according to the letter of the law, and I guarantee that players will alter their "antics" and play appropriately. Continue to be loose with the enforcement, and the players will continue to attempt to get away with everything.

Side anecdote... small town in which I used to live is notorious for pulling over drivers that go 2+ MPH over the speed limit. As I understand it, 2 MPH over is literally the lowest limit at which a cop can write a ticket (There's an understood possibility for error).
You better believe that the drivers in our area go 5+ MPH over in other areas, but in that town? Nope. 5 under. They understand the rules and regulations set forth, they understand that said rules and regulations will be enforced. NBA players can, and would, adapt.

But consistent and equal. Maybe add some clarity to the rules, make them more relaxed, and then make sure they are called.

I wouldn't care if they never called the "8 seconds to pass half court" rule or a backcourt violation.

I agree with this part.
They shouldn't call every little violation, but they should be consistent with what they call.

Yep, same where I live. I've never gotten a ticket. Everybody slows down to the speed limit when driving through that town.

How hard is it for a professional basketball player to not travel?

Lol worse thing is when people want Lebron to get called for travels. Does he travel? yes, but he's very good at making it look smooth. It's a skill. Almost all travels called are when a player shuffles their feet.

No. If they're not calling it, you should be doing it. Most viewers surely don't care or even notice most broken rules.

I hate when they randomly decide it is time to call defensive 3 in the key after a guy does it all game.

I'd like to see more travels called.

I'd like to see more offensive fouls called when a player lowers his should and rams a defender, feet set or not.

Change the hack-a-shaq rule.

"Player control" is a foul in the NCAA. I'd like for that to replace the "offensive foul" in the NBA. It makes defense 10x harder to play because there are too many specifics that the defender has to do to draw one.

If you look at the final 8 seconds of CAvsBulls when LEBron was bringing the ball up court he was basically combat battling Butler with his off arm. Had Jimmy battled back with his arm, there would be a foul.

I just dont think the rules are fair enough to where defenses can be great.

It does matter.

Remember the Tayshaun Prince block on Reggie? If Reggie didn't have to collect himself and not travel, maybe Tay couldn't get to him in time.

A few years after during the Lakers/Celtics final, Vlad Radmanovic had a blatant travel on a breakaway dunk (similar to Carmelo above). He caught the pass and took four steps to dunk. Paul Piece couldn't get to it in time. Didn't matter since the C's won the chip.

I find it hard why refs can't just call it as it is.

That said, the NBA better tighten up the rules especially on the "gather".

And this is why I disagree with current calls/rules.
Either call it all the time, or never. Make up your mind. If the rules are too restrictive, then change the rules, and follow them all the time.
