http://www.britannica.com/list/editor-picks-the-10-greatest-basketball-players-of-all-time

In short here is the list:

10. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
9. Tim Duncan
8. Shaquille O'Neal
7. Larry Bird
6. Bill Russell
5. Oscar Robertson
4. Wilt Chamberlain
3. Magic Johnson
2. Michael Jordan
1. LeBron James

The editor's "credentials" are "...this editor has been obsessively watching sports for nearly three decades and arguing about them with friends for nearly as long."

I think it's obvious why I posted it (I'm a secret Lebron James stan). Nah seriously this list has so many controversial choices that I figured it would create a decent discussion/debate.

I find that based on the list he values volume statistics over team success.

Hence Oscar, Wilt, and LeBron all being top 5.

Jerry West and Earl Monroe put Wilt above Russell. As does Rick Barry. In fact Monroe and Barry are very decisive about it, Barry even gets angry when people say Russell is greater than Wilt.

Hopefully you don't lose sleep over this information, but seeing as how insulted you were that some journalist put Wilt over Russell I figured you should know, actual NBA players of that era do too.

No sleep lost, rings heavily factor (but are not the only factor) of my top 10. Notice how the GOATs of a sport tends to win championships, and lots of them? Babe Ruth, Ali, Pele, Michael Jordan, Russell, Michael Johnson, Hicham El Guerrouj, Joe Montana/Jerry Rice, Michael Phelps... they won so much that they made it seem pedestrian.

Wilt as #1 is a joke. You can't disrespect the people on the previous list by putting Wilt up there with them. I won't scoff at someone placing him at ~5 though, depending on their criteria.

So Cavs, how do you feel about this guy putting Bron at #1?

Lebron has done a lot for the game. The smooth integration of the stiff arm, super flopping and losing in the worst conference of all time certainly cements his legacy :applause: :applause:

Don't care, good for him.

Oscar Robertson has Elgin Baylor at number 1 all-time.

Criteria is entirely subjective.

As for Chamberlain as the #1 of all time, I find it funny that an armchair fan like yourself thinks it's a "joke" to rank him number one. Is it your way or the highway, **** all if nobody can see it your way? There's so many former players, coaches, and people in the basketball community that have him that high it's more of a joke that you can't see why he gets those mentions. A great deal of players can be #1 if they fit a certain criteria. Wilt did a lot of things that no other player ever did, that means he's going to be #1 to a lot of people, because there's bound to be criteria that favors all the records and unmatched dominance he's got an easy case as GOAT as does a handful of other players.

To call it a joke that any of them be ranked #1 all time, by people that understand the game at a high level and saw them play, well that's just disrespectful.

Honestly, I have him ranked inside the top 20. There are still some great players between 10 and 20 who have achieved more with less AND/OR better resumes.

Jumping him into the top 10 is purely an in the moment WOW factor. When it's all said and done, he might not of reached top 12.

As you can tell I'm not a regular here but from the other lists I have seen this one stood out the most. I found it interesting because it is controversial to most NBA fans who have slightly or highly different lists than this.

Yeah, I forgot that as a non-professional or ex-NBA player, I have no say in the matter. I should heed the words of people who truly understood the game like Bill Walton, who said that "MJ was not top 3 of all time". And nearly all of them love to talk shit on the modern era and say how weak it is. No doubt George Mikan and his contemporaries lamented how weak the game had gotten after they retired too.
