The best balanced headphones you can get under $200 are the Audio Technica ATH-M50X's. I love them, they have a nice balanced sound, comfortable, durable, 3 different disconnectable cables, nice plushy-leather-like over the ear, earcups and a punchy bass that isn't exaggerated like Beats do and they're portable and fold-up.

These are good, but I'll pay double the price of the ATH-M50X's.

Don't buy Beats unless you consider them a fashion item only.

These are probably the best bassy headphones at that price range that I know of. A lot better than the cheap vmoda model anyway. http://www.engadget.com/products/logitech/ue/6000/

M50 series are not balanced, their lows are also slightly exaggerated. They do have great sound for the price, and you can't really beat it at that.

Those are prices in Canadian $, assuming OP is in Canada.

Sennheiser HD598 in USD. But they're open-back. Also the Shure SRH840 I suggested but they cost a bit more. I'm not saying the M50 series isn't a great listen, because it is. But it's not "balanced". I have a pair of the original ATH-M50, modden a removable cable myself, and they are a wonderful listen. OP couldn't go wrong with them, and they're my top suggestion for the OP since he wanted a good listen with nice bass.

Sony MDR1R (http://www.shopbot.ca/m/?m=Sony+MDR1R) are also a good suggestion for the OP, but I've never listened to them so I can't say much about them (been thinking of grabbing the bluetooth version actually)

Sennheiser HD598 in USD. But they're open-back.

I've been using 598's for 4-5 years. They are phenomenal, and I enjoy accurate bass representation that comes with open back cans, but they're not for everyone.

People can post 2-500 dollar headphones all they want, but headphones and speakers are just one link in a chain of hi-fidelity music listening. Introducing a low quality product at any step will drastically reduce your experience.

Half the people posting their ATH's have them plugged into their S3 or some other shit.

You need high quality recordings, a high quality and dedicated DAC, proper amplification, and finally quality headphones or speakers.

You're talking 100's of dollars at each step for just a beginner setup, and if you never intend to bolster your entire audio chain there's no need to spend 200 dollars on a pair of headphones. There's plenty of 15 dollar buds on Amazon that will give you nearly the same performance given a low quality system.

I've heard great things about the Beyerdynamic DT 770's but have yet to try them personally.

They're in the same price range as the ATH-M50.

Get the 32ohm version of DT770 pro unless if you have an amp. If you have an amp then get the DT770 250ohm version.

I own the DT880 250ohm version that I bought used 5 years ago. I would recommend the DT880, but it is more money. I am running it underpowered without an amp, which is stupid. I couldn't afford an amp at the time then I just forgot about it. Sounds very good as it is though. Still very underpowered..

They are not a headset. But Audio Technica does make headsets. (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=audio%20technica%20headsets&sprefix=audio+technica+headsets%2Celectronics) Sennheiser makes some nice ones too.

Not sure what your financial situation is, but I recommend getting the V-Moda M100.

They are over $300 but they're worth it.

The sound is good-great, the lows give you oomph when they're needed, never bloated, the mids and the highs are well represented... so great sound all around.

You might find some that have slightly better sound, but I'll here are a few reasons why the M100 are worth the price:

Portability
Quality
Design
Construction

they may be the best all around headphones.

If you want portable, get an IEM. You can get a Vsonic VSD3 for $60 on Amazon. They have good clarity, good bass, and for an IEM, good soundstage. Really good value. Cable is also replaceable.

The Vsonic VSD5 also just came out, and they cost $70. Haven't tried them but they seem to have greater detail and better mids, though the frequency response seems to be brighter.

If you are mostly going to be stationary while listening to music, but still want isolation and to not bother people, then get a over ear headphone.

You can find a VModa M100 for about $200 used. You can also find the M50X for around that price and even less used. I had the MDR-1R from Sony, they aren't worth the price. Dynamics and clarity are lacking, and bass is flabby and lacks punch. Vocals were okay, but not really lush. Heard good things about the the Audio Technica MDRS-7, and if you want the best closed headphone under $500 that doesn't need an amp, get the Shure 1540.

If you just want really good sound, at good price, and don't care about compromise, get an open headphone. I won't go into them, since it would take long, and i'm not even sure they are an option for you. They usually also need a dac/amp.

By the way, don't be afraid to buy used. Headphones are rarely worth the price new, but if you can find the right deal used, you will be delighted.

I have had 2 headphones that are considered Hi-Fi; the Sennheiser HD600, and now the Hifiman HE-500.

The Senn at the time sold for $400 new, i bought it like new, used, for $270.

The HE-500, when it came out in 2012, was $900, and it is a bona fide end game heapdhone. I bought one last sunday, used, for $350.

Buy used, unless the difference is less than 10-15%.

Last time I bought a used bluetooth ps3 mic, there was still ear wax around the piece you put into your ear. Never going down the used route again :oldlol:

Anyways guys, this is what I went with:

Considering I don't have any modifications to my audio like amp or DAC or whatever, I just bought these pair. Ended up as $60 with one day shipping. What do you guys think?

Try them. you can always return them. Amazon is usually good with returns.

Btw I ordered the plantronics backbeat pro. Best bluetooth headphones on the market for under 400$. You want aptx for sure if you get bluetooth headphones.

Sony is releasing mdr1abt soon and denon is releasing gc20 soon. Both going to be top of the line but 400$. I cannot afford that.
