[quote]The Los Angeles Lakers are one of several teams preparing "possible maximum-salary offer sheets" for Chicago Bulls shooting guard Jimmy Butler, reports Shams Charania of RealGM.
Butler will enter restricted free agency after reportedly turning down a four-year, $40 million offer from the Bulls in October.
As a restricted free agent, Butler will be able to sign an offer sheet with any team, but Chicago has the right of first refusal and can match any offer.
In January, the Chicago Tribune reported that the Bulls expect to sign Butler to a maximum contract.
From RealGM:
Outside of Chicago, teams are already preparing possible maximum-salary offer sheets for Butler in free agency, including the Los Angeles Lakers as one of several expected suitors, league sources told RealGM. Even Butler

Reports also indicate butler doesnt like playing second fiddle to a shoot first pointguard that will attempt 20-25 field goals every night while making roughly 40% of them

I'd jizz my damn pants if we could get one of jimmybee or kawhi.
I think a bigger score for LA would be if we got Thibs as our head coach. If we actually got a quality coach, I could see FA's finally wanting to sign with LA.

Bulls would be f*cking stupid to let him go, but, they are cheap as hell if history servers as any indicator, so it is possible. Still, if Jimmy leaves the Bulls, he'll probably sign with a contending team that offers him the max, instead of the rebuilding Lakers.

He's not even good. Hopefully the Bulls are stuck paying this kid a max contract.

Can the Bulls afford the pay Butler the Max? I know the owner isn't a fan of the luxury tax.

Butler knows better than to associate himself with a cancerous atmosphere. That team has no direction with no clue on how to move on from this era of Kobe Bryant.

Despite CHI's notoriety for being cheap, i see a 0% chance they dont retain him. Especially with the cap increase in the next 2 years.

He is a RFA. Which means even if he begs Chi not to match such an offer sheet they immediately will.
Even with him signed to a max deal they won't be over the tax with a few caveats. First, Brooks and Dunleavy aren't under contract. If they wanted to keep Dunleavy (or both) they could but would likely go into the tax.
All of this points to the inescapable point that THIS THREAD DOESN'T MATTER. The Bulls would absolutely match. In which case, they MIGHT be out Dunleavy.

With the way the league operates today, he's absolutely a Max level player. The game has gone so much high PnR and kick out. He's shown over a couple seasons now that he can catch and shoot (albeit with a little hiccup last year). And he's also shown an ability to create while Rose was out with the ball. Getting into the lane for himself, and showing some ability to read a defense and find outlets to shooters. The league has also made it harder than ever to defend guys on the perimeter, yet he has still managed to be among the better perimeter defenders out there.
Can catch and shoot. Can handle the ball in the PnR. And he can defend at a plus level. That's the trifecta in the league at the moment.
There may be a slight concern over the fact that he's missed chunks of multiple seasons. But it's not as if we're talking structural type damage. And personality wise by all accounts the kid is spot on.
I said before as a Celtic fan I'd throw the max and him and Kwahi Leonard. You won't get either. But what's the point of creating space if you're not going to make a pitch with it.
"We're willing to pay both of you guys. We want to create an identity as a perimeter defending monster. We have draft picks and young players to use to find you guys a PG and a post presence, either in the draft or by using those assets as trade bait. And we still have enough assets moving forward to round out the roster with affordable young assets, so we don't paint ourselves into a corner as you guys near the end of your contracts."
Like I said, it won't work, but you've gotta make a pitch.

Butler and Kawhi would be great players for the Lakers to get but Bulls and Spurs would be out of their minds not to match those guys, so I won' dream with any of them.

Why tie up the cap space with an offer that the Bulls will definitely match?

That would be a dumb move. You don't need to overpay a role player like Mavs did with Parson. Ye I know butler at least plays D and he can somehow score but he is not way a franchise player. Better give the max to a big guy.

Him, Allen, Leonard and Green have really got me into the defensive side of basketball this season. He is absolutely a max contract player. In fact any defensive star (even Tony Allen) is worth the max just as much as a purely offensive player

Lakers have to offer Butler, Kawhi and Draymond max contracts just so their teams have to pay them the max. they won't get them but it will still hurt the other teams.
the only FA's I want the lakers to sign are DeMarre Carroll and DeAndre Jordan, pair them with Karl Towns, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson and you have a good team for the next 5 years, might even lure Kobe to stick around.

Lakers have no choice at this point but to do so.
They'll have to entice and overpay role players to sign on that know going in..... that Kobe will take the most FGA and will have no shot at making the postseason. Then after that it will take a few years to get players to gel.
