What exactly does "Hold the W or L" mean?

In the case of "Hold the W"
Does it mean hold off on it because you haven't won? Or hold on to it for now because you'll quickly lose it? Or is it a congratulations type phrase?

I'm just trying to figure out if hold the W has negative connotations like "Hold the W for now...." type idea like you've won this time or positive like "you did good, have the W" because I've seen it both ways.

I think it's a mixture of hold this and... take the L. Like hold my beer except its an L.

Not an L L but a loss. Could think of it as a metaphorical dunce cap.
