On of the greatest blues men, if not the greatest. Gone at 89.

I saw him twice. First time at The Palace Theatre in Stamford, CT, which is an old style theatre, and it was a great experience. We got there a bit early, and there was no opening act. His band was kitting up on a darkened stage, and there was only a single light, that sat on a large chair, with his guitar, Lucille, on a stand. There wasn't even really an announcement. He just sort of ambled on stage. Got a huge round of applause, waved as he made his way to the chair. Sat down, picked up Lucille, and just started going. It was one of the coolest entry's I've ever seen. We got to say hello in the back alley as he was leaving. The second time was a short set he did in the very early days when his place in midtown NY opened up.

I'm a fan of the genre in general. And while he's not my favorite of the guys cut from his clothe, he was such an enormous influence and presence that I always loved his stuff even if it wasn't my perfect taste.

This was sad to wake up to. Like the poster above me, I also had the pleasure to meet him after a show he did at Lupo's in Providence....2002 or 2003, it was. I saw a lot of shows there and met a lot of bands and performers...he remains one of the most memorable encounters. He was tickled by a white college kid from New England chatting him up about the real old blues and was nothing short of a gentleman.

He was the genuine article and is irreplaceable. Rest easy, King.

Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the force.

Terrible. Will be lost on the boys of this message board but just an enormous loss. One of the biggest musicians of the 20th century.
