View Full Version : Has the term hipster evolved?

Has the term hipster evolved. What was once used to describe a culture of socially different people is now a term for people who try too hard.
Things hipsters overkilled:
- craft beer
- beards or weird staches
- beanie hats
- skinny jeans

The words means the same thing. Hipsters today just like different hipster activities than hipsters of the past. The worse kind of hipsters are the ones who deny their hipster hood and say things like "What does hipster even mean?" or "That word is offensive to me."

I dont think they overkilled craft beer. You just want to make sure you avoid hipsters when youre drinking it, discussing it, or not doing either.

Beards have always been something that very few young people can pull off with style. I guess maybe hipsters ruined the look for those few people, but... I cant say I really care either way.

You can still wear beanies and not look like a hipster, as long as you dont have the rest of the full fledged hipster look going.

Skinny jeans kinda died out when Led Zeppelin disbanded so theres really no further harm hipsters could have done to them.

Went to a tiny underground bar once that didn't have a sign but had a french name, "La Cave Du Vin"

It was lit by candle chandeliers and had 1,000 different types of beer nobody has ever heard of imported from who knows where. My friend asked the bartender for a bud light and the bartender laughed at him out loud. I felt like knocking the bartender out and my friend looked like he wanted to strangle him but we kept our cool. ****ing hate hipsters.

My friend is poor/cheap/doesn't care about the taste of beer, he'll pretty much always pay $3.50 for a budlight instead of $5 for something that he thinks tastes better. Pretty sure it's 4.5 like 90% of any other beers. And actually it was just mentioned one more reason my friend drinks it. Calories. It's the most widely available "low-calorie" beer. It's mainstream as **** and America is mostly fat. It's the go to beer for most people in America, it's at every ball park basketball arena and football stadium, and pretty much at every bar that's why my friend instinctively asked. You drink a lot of it, get drunk, and in theory it's better/cheaper to drink in quantity than if you chugged a bunch of something else.

Aren't you from Canada? Don't know if it's the same by you but there's a huge drinking problem in U.S. People are conditioned in the U.S. since their late teens to get trashed on cheap alcohol. Not all of us grow out of that phase, nor affinity for the cheap low calorie beers like Bud/Miller/Coors.

They serve it at every sports stadium in the country... so why didn't this weird bar have it??

It's just like those organic grocery stores. It's against the concept but they still have to stock conventional items that appeal to mass market. You can't completely kill off that revenue stream. the place wouldn't be kept alive if they depended on such a little revenue stream. Bars are expensive to keep open.
Bud and Bud light are the most consumed beers in NA. I don't drink them personally, but the majority of the drinking population does.

The demographics have changed now to where it's not created with quality in mind but to take advantage of certain markets. They are popping up everywhere now because they know it's a new revenue stream that's hot. It's actually fairly easy to brew your own beer now. There is no craftsmanship behind it. Just make a beer, throw in an obscure flavor. Name the brand after your pet budgie, and voila, you are now a brewmaster. The hipsters eat this shit up.

Plenty of grocery stores don't carry lots of popular items

Whole foods doesn't carry shit and they are doing fine

That bar has a target demographic And they think the non bud light demo can keep them in business

And I'm assuming the owner has a passion for beer and probably doesn't want to serve that shitty beer in his bar

Whole Foods is a unique case in which they pioneered a market, established it, and successfully cornered a brand name in this market space. Many grocery stores have tried to emulate them but most fail to compete and eventually do bring in the conventional items. Plus those conventional items help to bring the costs down and create an overall bigger margin when they blanket it across the entire store.

As for a bar sticking to the craft beer concept, of course there are many that are successful and will survive by only serving there own brew. But again, those guys have established a themselves years ago and cornered a market. My regular spot in Philly is all craft brews brewed in house. New places that pop up can't and won't compete, especially places like Cavs described that are pretentious and obnoxious, will eventually bring in the mainstream brands. I have many friends who opened up to try the concept. Eventually you have to keep up with consumer demands and when you can sell 3 or 4 bud lights to 1 craft beer, they know where the money is.
Don't get me wrong, I support my local craft, but business is business.

I think I might have got sidetracked :lol were we talking about hipsters?

Drinking any kind of beer to get drunk makes no sense to me

You have to drink so much
Yeah but you have a more controlled drunkedness. I like gin and whiskey too but i can easily lose control of how much I've drank since i drink them straight or i pour a lot of gin into my ginger ale.

6-8 beers gives me a good buzz for the night. 12 is manageable during 4 hours and gets me drunk but not overly drunk to the point that ima wake up drunk. I got stuff to do in the morning bro.

The difference between cheap beer and expensive beer is only what it does to your taste buds, why are people so critical? It's not like the drunken state is any different between the two. Not any difference in terms of health either, both 'generally' unhealthy, cheap beer may be better due to less calories on average.

food snobs >>>> beer snobs

The difference between quality food and fast food is extreme in several ways, taste, mental and physical health, and moral/environmental factors.

and nah, I've honestly never enjoyed that lite beer shit in any situation, and I'm honestly surprised that a lot of grown ass men apparently do buy it, since even in high school people knew the difference. Nobody was sneaking in cans of bud lite :lol
I'm not sure I know many people that can't enjoy a budlight. It's pretty typical to see people drinking, and enjoying domestic light beers for a wide variety of occasions.

I hope you grow out of your pretentiousness someday.

Bud Light is tramp piss. There are several NORMAL BEERS just as cheap that aren't 2% alcohol content shit.

Yeah but I can honestly say I can enjoy a Bud Light... like how I can enjoy a glass of lemonade.

Not just me, but a lot of people I know feel the same way. I enjoy craft beer too, and my personal beers of choice are stouts. But if someone hands me a bud light on a summer day, I'm not just settling for it, I actually enjoy it. Sitting at a basketball game, or a baseball game with a cheap ass bud or miller. Puts a smile on my face.

Does that bother you, really?

It's not pretentiousness. You're adamantly defending an objectively inferior product, because it's cheaper and has wacky super bowl commercials. "Hipster" has joined a long list of annoying modern terminology that has lost all weight with me. It's just a generic insult for dipshits. It's like when people call something pretentious because they're stupid and don't get it.

"Oh you shop at whole foods/trader joes?" hipster.
"oh you have thick rimmed glasses?" hipster.
"oh you bought a funny t-shirt on the internet?" hipster.
"oh you like Wilco?" hipster.
"oh you like independent movies?" hipster.
"oh you talked shit about Wal-Mart?" hipster.
"oh irony amuses you?" hipster.
"oh you root for the clippers and not the lakers?" hipster.
"oh you buy local?" hipster.
"oh you like to ride bikes?" hipster.
"oh you don't like something with mass appeal?" hipster.
"oh you do anything differently than I do?" hipster.

It's just so broad and baseless. There's a difference between hip and hipster.
If liking good food, music, and movies makes a hipster then I hope we get over run by them. Yes, some kid with a rat tail, wearing the shirt of a band he hates, talking about how he used to like Death Cab For Cutie before they got popular is obnoxious, but this endless desire to define it and separate yourself from it is as lame as the people on here talking about "haters", "swag", "alpha vs beta", "basic people", and whatever other boring, f*ck boy lingo makes people feel cool or superior. It's so played out. Die in a fire you tired, cantankerous simpletons.

There's some places that sell american food, like pretty good american style burgers, and it's full of hipsters. The same kind of food would be served by the complete opposite in America and it makes me laugh. It's full of hipsters eating there and working there. The skinniest of skinny jeans, slicked back hair, weird glasses, mom jeans (which I don't mind because they tend to accentuate the booty) and weird 90s courtney love type looks.

They play old style american black music and then got NBA basketball games on the TV. Hipster as ****.

Then you got every bar playing house music non stop.

I don't mind it. If hipsters bring solid american style food/bars and it tastes good, I'm all for it.

They aren't, don't let two beer snobs tell you otherwise. Suburban/college-town kegger culture is alive and well. As is the cookout/tailgating it naturally evolves towards as you grow older. It all involves cheap ass beers stocked in coolers and kegs.

Yeah that's reasonable for those activities not so much for going to a weird beer bar
The bar is adjacent to a Panini's and didn't have a sign. Just seemed like any old hole in the wall bar. It's next to a college so in an area where lots of college kids drink cheap beer.

You'd honestly think it should have had bud light on tap, any reasonable person would have thought so. I posted a pic of it, it looks no different than any other dumpy underground bar. Shame on us for not knowing the reputation of the place when wandering around looking for some beers right? Lol, so true.

For me and how the word has evolved into is a person that does/wears a collective of trendy things solely because it defines them and some weird sense of entitlement that goes with it.
Like when it comes to craft beer. The main reason they hang out at microbrews or beer markets is a sense of entitlement, not because they actually like craft beer. I would probably run laps on them when it comes to identifying beers and terminology. I bet if you put bud light in a craft beer bottle and pour some chocolate milk in there most hipsters wouldn't notice the difference and drink it down with their smug attitudes.

Last year, right before the league started, I hiked the grand canyon all way to the bottom and back out, the hike back up was "supposed to" take 8 hours but I did it in less than 4, then drove home to LA that day. My legs were so shot the next day I couldn't even stand on my tip toes, let alone run and jump, but low and behold, it was opening day of my basketball season. I had been picked up by the perennial best team in the league, they didn't win every year but they were always in the finals, multiple MVPs, dunk contest winners, etc, basically not your average rec league team. I'm thinking "great, I can just be an energy guy deep off the bench and play support". I show up and there's only 5 of us there, so I'm going to have to run the whole game. F*ck. I look across the court and who are we playing against? Ron f*cking Artest and Terrell Owens (and a pack of other cats who played college ball). It was actually a major athletic highlight in my life (I was such a dorky fan boy towards Metta Peace "hey man! where you playing this year?"), and we hung in there pretty well with them til the end, but it sucked to be going up against guys like that and be so debilitated. League starts up again in June I think, I may move to the rec division instead of the competitive division, I'm 36 and there's guys I just can't do anything with anymore.

This is whats up, I just dont get why white people gotta dress like f@gs when they enjoy these things.

My friends getting laughed at in response to asking for a bud light was totally his fault.
Why did you edit to say "My friends getting laughed at" instead of the reality, what you had before: "My getting laughed at" ?

It was obviously you who asked.

It wouldn't matter who it was but no, It wasn't me in this instance.

I edited the post because I accidentally left that keyword out, read the sentence again before I even edited, it only makes sense with that word in it.

Also look at the thread brought up in this thread where I posted this same story several months back. It doesn't matter anyways. Or does it to you guys? I like stouts. I don't ask for budlights if I have the option for something else. That said, I don't mind drinking one if it's put in front of me or I'm boozing it up at a BBQ in the summer or tailgating, or at a sports event.

Of course it only makes sense with that word in it. I'm not implying that you left it out on purpose obviously, but you know the truth. :lol

And I'm aware of that thread. Remembered it as soon I saw you repost the story in here.

Exactly my point. It's just become this arbitrary insult. Drinking Pabst? hipster. Beer snob? Hipster. Never mind that they're polar opposites. As long as you can't relate to someone's behavior, they're a hipster.

And that's it.

I think, the most common stereotypical hipster might not even exist. It is someone with their hair shaved on the sides and back and a big floppy side part on the top, wearing a plaid shirt (fitted) and jeans, and some kind of expensive remake of sensible shoes.
They live in Brooklyn, operate some sort of craft workshop where they perpetually lose their parents money and drink hoppy IPA or plssy lager.

The funny thing is having a beard, wearing flannel, or sweatshirts with pictures of wolves on them and drinking shit beer is basically the textbook definition of every backwoods Canadian, except these guys really work with their hands for a living, are right wing, probably racist and would kick your ass if you called them anything.

Hipster are real life trolls who are trolling the manliest of men (lumberjacks etc.) and biting their style in order to stand out in their urban milieu.

Today however hipster is just as manufactured as punk, grunge and every other f*cked out style in the world. No one can pinpoint it anymore because it is mainstream, we all have elements of it because much of it is mainstream style and fashion. If you call someone a hipster as an insult you are likely out of touch, it is usually something friends of parents would call someone in a news story they posted as a blanket insult for young people who aren't fitting in.

It was originally coined by one Lester Young, the President of Jazz.

Now it just means boring and contrived white liberals who want to pretend to be hip.
