View Full Version : Is X the Greatest Ever Relative to Usage Rate?

I'll let you find out for yourself who X is..

Clue: aside from an impressive resume, his cumulative PER is higher than his USG% (both in playoffs and regular season.)

Now that you (probably) know who he is: does his low USG%, relative to his numbers and resume, affect how you'd rank him all-time?

You are expecting far too much effort out of an ISH poster on Sunday morning. Im in a room ankle deep with Leffe blonde beer(something like that) bottles and wingstreet wing boxes needing to cleanup and probably spray some air freshener....and you want me to solve for x?

Your topic is too demanding and I opt to instead post this picture of a Bobbit worm dragging a fish to hell:

What's up with that gif Kblaze? So random. You just wanted to post that and don't care if the topic don't match.

Anyway, Chris Paul? There's a few PGs that have higher PERs than usage. Magic Johnson is one of them too.

Good day.Oh, then one of us will be a sport and remind the audience that LeBron manhandling the Bulls yet again is a thing of the past, but thanks for the recap.

Of course I just wanted to post it. I had no idea what the OP was about. She I suppose...wants us to compare a list of all time PER to usage rates? Im not doing all that. I assumed she might return with more information were it made clear that I(and I assume others) didnt quite get it or want to do the work to uncover the mystery.

That said....bobbit worms are interesting.

Magic Johnson is one of them too. That's the correct answer.

I feel like that didnt come out the way you intended. Read your last post aloud...doesnt that kinda hit the ear wrong? Im sure I get your point(this time). But it was oddly worded.

I wouldnt have guessed him. I know his usage would be fairly low considering his teams running and how little he shot...but his PER wasnt great. Screwing over guys like Magic is one reason I dont care for PER.

He had legendary seasons(far as impact and winning games) with his per at like 22-23.

It's cuz of pace I think. His 87 season he had a per of 27.0 tho. Every stat you have take within context. None of them tell the whole story....except for 3pt shot and FT% I guess.

Im sure it is largely because of pace. That and someone deciding they know what an assist is worth relative to a rebound.

That said....bobbit worms are interesting. It's not about PER, rather usg%. It's startling that a player succeeds in affecting the game with that kind of usage the way Magic had done. He's an anomaly among the greats in that regard, whether that's a positive or a non-issue is up for debate, and that's what I wanted to shed some light on.

As for Bobbit worms..

He had legendary seasons(far as impact and winning games) with his per at like 22-23.That's cuz PER favors scorers, which Magic wasn't.

I thought Bill Russell would make an equally great case, but UR's from back then weren't available.
Not surprisingly, he's also the most screwed all-time GOAT by PER, followed by Magic and post '66 Wilt.

Not to mention steals and blocks. Reckon defensive stats like deflections and shots altered which're just as valuable will inevitably find their way into scoreboards one day.
