PG is historically a relatively weak position. So not that crazy.

It's not that crazy to be honest. You have Magic the undisputed 1.
Oscar at 2.
Isiah at 3.

After that? No point guard has won enough or played at a high enough level while winning to be sure fire top 5. I wouldnt be comfortable ranking anyone after those guys.

Maybe only stat geeks who only pay attention to box scores and advanced stats. They don't care about playoff success and winning.

True, but Kidd and Stockton are still higher than Paul and would be considered top 5 before he would at this point. At least those players went to the Finals and one won it, although at the end of his career.

Neither have the surefire stats or accolades or rings to be ranked over any great point guard in my opinion. Not just talking about CP3. I could mix and match after the top 3.

I still think he's easily one of the best ever. The Clippers losing this series didn't change my opinion of him at all really.

Put him in the east where he can face weak competition year after year and he'd go down as an all time great.

I'd say Magic, Oscar, Isiah, and Stockton are all undoubtedly top 5, but the fifth spot can honestly go to a number of players, ranging from Cousy, Frazier, Kidd, Payton, Nash, CP3 etc.

Chris Paul's stats are always good, but they don't reflect his choke jobs in the post season.

Perfect example was game 6 against Houston. 31/11/7. What a game! But he was nowhere to be found as his team choked away a 19 point lead in an closeout game.

Great second tier star, but he's clearly not in the conversation of best players of his generation (Kobe, Lebron, Wade, KG, etc).

They are as silly as those who think Kobe is a great player.

Anyway, Nash >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> CP3.

CP3 is still in the top 20 GOAT PGs though, don't hate.

not weak just not that impactful. if you ask any GM they would take a superstar at any other position if they had to decide between that and a PG.

I'm not saying necessarily that CP3 is top 5 all time, but what is Nash's argument over CP3? I've never really thought about it.

Probably his MVP's

Kidd and Stockton probably because of longevity. Payton probably because of defense.

I get Walt and Isiah and I don't think we really need to bring up Oscar and Magic.

Its weird, CP3 is probably as talented and effective as Kobe if not more... but because he didn't have prime Shaq he would be lucky to go down as a top 50 player.

The impact that being drafted to a good franchise can have.

he was SG, which makes what he did seriously one of the most unbelievable things in nba history. A 5'10 SG carrying a team to the frikkin finals

He absolutely has.

What PG was better than him in 07/08 ?

2007-2009 he was easily the Best.

kshutts1

Most people that call CP3 a top 5 all time PG do so based on the strength of his advanced stats. They rival, or even beat, Magic's.

Magic, Oscar, Cousy, Stockton are all better in my mind.

Then so many other players in the conversation... (not in order)
Zeke
Frazier
Kidd
Payton
CP3
Nash
and probably some others I have forgotten (or don't view as highly as some people do).

We also have the younger PGs now gunning for a spot...
Westbrook
Curry
Irving
Lillard

I do think the top 4 are set in stone, though. Reading this thread, I see that very few people agree with me, and that's fine... but in my mind those top 4 are set in stone.

kobe could be on the list technically. he was the lakers PG for all 5 titles

he will go down as a shooting guard who had to cover PG responsibilities while scoring 25-30ppg

CP3's MVP Shares

2007-08 NBA 0.706 (2)
2008-09 NBA 0.159 (5)
2010-11 NBA 0.002 (13)
2011-12 NBA 0.318 (3)
2012-13 NBA 0.239 (4)
2013-14 NBA 0.036 (7)
2014-15 NBA 0.095 (6)

I'd put him around 10. His regular season play has been outstanding and he's been a top 5 player in the league several times. But CP3 has only played in 64 play off games!

Magic
Oscar
Isiah
Stockton
Frazier
Nash
Payton
Kidd
Parker

All rank higher for me. They all have played more playoff game, plus they were no slouches themselves in the regular season.
