Paul Pierce, former Celtics and Nets teammate: "One time, he asked [Joakim] Noah if he could rub through his hair, like a female or something. ... And I know that kind of made [Noah] hot. And this was when Noah was a rookie, too. I remember Noah looked up to KG. He was like, 'Man, KG, I had your poster on my wall, I looked up to you, man.' And then [Garnett] just said something like that, and was like 'F--- you, Noah.' I was like, 'Whoa.' This kid fresh out of college, looks up to KG, just said he had his poster on the wall, and he tells him that! It crushed him. It crushed Noah."
Pierce again, recalling a light moment between himself (then with Boston) and Garnett (then with Minnesota): "We were both on losing teams at this point. This is probably around the last week of the season. We're talking [trash] at the free throw line. I'm like, 'Man, everybody needs to shut up, because we all going to the Bahamas next week.' And as intense as he was, he had to look up and just start laughing. ... I said, 'I'm going to Cancun. Where are you going, Ticket?' He said, 'I'm going to St. Lucia.'"
Gotta love, KG.

ESPN is pathetic. They took this from another story that had loads of great stuff about KG, then they take the only part of it that made him look like a bully.

Why does everyone judge competitiveness based on the faces players make, how much they yell, and how much emotion they show in general.
KG isn't anymore competitive than the next guy in the NBA. He just acts like an ass.

We're talking about players/coaches from the game that is actually played up close and personal. People have dealt with many players and still say this about KG.
competitiveness: having a strong desire to compete or to succeed

So why did they have all this stuff about KG? Is he retiring? I thought he said he was going to play for Minny next year?

And this isn't anything new. Anyone that's followed the NBA during KG's career has heard about his insane drive and competitiveness. Are most guys in the NBA uber-competitive, too? Sure, but there's just too many stories and first hand accounts and opinions from current and former players and coaches that backup the common opinion that KG is on a different level than most when it comes to drive and competitiveness.

If I had to pick between rooting for Noah and KG, since I hate both, I'd pick KG since he actually has game.
Don't get me wrong though, KG is a dirty piece of shit and not as tough as he'd like you to think. Instigates shit and then runs away

This has always made me laugh...here I thought they were playing basketball...but no it was being a "tough guy" which is what mattered. *smirk*
Kevin Garnett is one of the greatest players of all time and especially one of the greatest defensive players of all time. That's enough for me...if I want to watch "tough guys" I'll watch some kind of fighting league.

Tyronn Lue: A lot of people do all their howling on the court and they're faking just for attention, but what he does is genuine. So one day we were at his house and we were watching Puff Daddy's show Making the Band, and in one of the scenes, some new guys came in and were trying to sing and were trying to compete against the guys who had been there. And KG just got so hyped, "Motherf----r, you've got to stand up for yours! You've got to fight! Motherf----r, you've got to come together!" He's going crazy, he's sweaty. And he just head butts the wall and put a hole in the wall of his house.

Nah, he is a great player, but overrated. He was the great athletic freak in such a big body that people hadn't seen before, and he paved the way, but he lacked the edge on the offensive side.
Dirk was better than him and so was Duncan. Both played during his time, and were players that simply got it done better than he ever could.
I don't get the St. Lucia part. Someone explain. :(

LolThat part made me laugh (along with the part about him having to sit in time-out in Doc Rivers' office while Rivers' silently did paperwork).
Also, I'd generally agree that the rah-rah type of stuff doesn't mean someone's competitive by default. But Lue echoes what many have said about Garnett - his seems to be legit. There were multiple accounts in that oral history where teammates or coaches appealed to Garnett's former employers for tips as to how to tone him down - even just for practices. The answer always seemed the same: "You can't tone him down. That's what he is. All of the times."
I don't get the St. Lucia part. Someone explain. :(Yeah, that part seemed kind of out of place. I thought there'd be a continuation of that story on the next page but that was it. I thought it was leading to something about how Garnett never looked forward and always played hard, even when his team sucked or something.

First time I noticed that KG baited him. He actually hit him first. KG is a psycho. The Noah thing was a Rites of Passage. You don't tell a competitor that.

Odd. To me intensity is the easiest competitive emotion to see in a genuine sense. If you can't tell he's intense you don't have a sixth sense at all. He played the same way for years. Your hate is clouding what you see.
An intense person is usually filled with challenge and goal in his blood.

How did Dirk get it done better than KG? He shot from long range better than KG but the buck stops there. Dribble, passing, defense, communication, different skill sets, rebounding,
KG was very skilled, maybe the most skilled big man ever.
