Why don't more defenders shade right harder to try to force him to his right? He goes left, every time, and forcing him right won't stop him because he's skilled enough to counter and go back left, but it would take him out of his comfort zone and push him toward the top of the key more than just pretending like he's an equal threat to drive left or right.

Even if they're trying to defend against the shot, shading right puts them closer to his shooting hand.

So, why?

I'm sure its easier said than done, that's why.

These guys are getting paid millions of dollars, to play a sport a 5 year old can play.

As a player, I liked to go right.

And no matter what you did, I could always find a way to go right.

It really is easier said than done. Instead of shading anything, best bet is to stay low, stay in front, stay balanced, and if he takes a shot get your hand up.

So it's harder than it looks to...slide your feet 6-8 inches to the right against a player you *know* is going left?

I'm not calling for some complicated defensive scheme, just wondering why more defenders don't try the obvious thing. Maybe there's s good reason but I don't know what it is.

I'm conceding that he will find a way to go left. But (on-ball) defense is about making it harder for the ball handler to do what he wants. If it takes Harden 1.3 more seconds to go left - that is a good thing. If he has to shoot from his 3rd favorite spot instead of his favorite spot, that's good, relatively speaking.

Why let him do what he wants to without putting up any resistance?

And explain to me why it is better to stay low/directly in front of a player you KNOW is going left?
