Pretty great Illustration IMO... on the other side, Dadda, even guys like Bruce back in the day (or 3ball even excessively lol), have also offered great arguments for 1990's defense being stronger, on beating Zone, and the impact of no defensive 3 secs / handchecking.

Without 3-point shooting, previous eras didn't have weakside floor-spreaders to draw defenders away from the strongside, so players faced more defenders on the strongside than today's game.

Agreed - in the picture below, weakside floor-spreaders have drawn defenders away from the strongside.. If Noah doesn't leave #20 Mosgov and flood to the strongside, the strongside will only have 2 defenders on it.. This demonstrates how spacing necessitates flooding - defenders must flood BACK to the strongside (Noah), only because they were originally drawn away by floor-spreaders on the weakside (Mosgov)

Otoh, previous eras didn't have weakside floor-spreaders drawing defenders away from the strongside, so the strongside was usually ALREADY FLOODED with all 5 defenders, as seen below:

Without 3-point shooting, previous eras didn't have spacing or weakside floor-spreaders to draw defenders away from the strongside, so players faced more defenders on the strongside than today's game.. In today's game, weakside spacing ensures a more porous distribution of strongside defenders that prevents today's players from ever having to face a strongside with all 5 defenders on it (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11128077&postcount=21).

Accordingly, the stats of today's players should be downgraded appropriately, particularly the paint and at-rim efficiencies that benefited from the porous strongside defense.. It should also be noted that the porous spacing also allows today's players to take longer with decisions, while getting away with a weaker, less sophisticated repertoire and isolation ability (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=375397).

The clip at 8:05 is the most telling.

A Technical Foul for going below the FT line for one second, because he wasn't guarding the big man out by the 3pt line. :oldlol:

The GIFs I use are EXAMPLES of what the STANDARD is.

If you guys knew the game, I wouldn't have to use ANY examples...

Weakside floor-spreaders take defenders away from the strongside ON EVERY PLAY you dumb ****... So I don't need ANY examples... This stuff is plain as day for anyone to see.

Lebron's Isolations in Game 2 vs. Hawks

Today's spacing allows Lebron to face only 1 defender on strongside!!!.. Weakside floor-spreaders lure the rest away:

http://gifsforum.com/images_new/gif/other/grand/5f6d4329b3bcca4b79bf694fe56dfe1e.gif

Same as Game 1.. Only 1 defender on strongside:

http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/5-22-2015/4KTtgX.gif

In GIF below from Game 2, spacing & defensive 3 seconds keeps weakside defenders out of paint, so Lebron gets wide open layup - but in previous eras, there was no spacing and paint-camping was legal, so there would've been SEVERAL defenders waiting in paint:

Today's spacing provides more space & time on isos than before:

It's clear as day - today's spacing and existence of weakside floor-spreaders lures defenders away from the strongside and enables players to face LESS defenders on the strongside than previous eras...

In addition to the porous strongside defense caused by weakside floor-spreaders, the spacing provides more time and room for players to operate.. It also combines with the bans on paint-camping and hand-checking to "open up the game" for perimeter players, as the league intended (http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/04/09/stujackson/index.html).
