View Full Version : Why does Curry get a free pass when he only needs to play on 1 end?

Don't get me wrong I think Curry is a great player, maybe the best shooter of all time but people bash the likes of Harden for his mediocre defense, why does Curry get a free pass?
Curry never needs to guard the other teams' best player. It's always Klay, Green, Iggy, Barnes etc
Closest comparison is probably Steve Nash
Curry plays defense this year.

congrats he got a rebound against a taller player, bet that's never happened before. Did you know Nate Robinson blocked a 7 footer?

I'm just gonna take this as a "No I can't find a clip of Steve Nash doing anything remotely close to that".

Because he's dominant offensively. Magic wasn't a lock down defender as well and is the better point guard ever.

You said Curry = Steve Nash. I showed you a play that Steve Nash could never do. So Curry doesn't = Steve Nash on defense. Deal with it.

He got a surprising amount of all nba defense votes. Think even a first place vote (which is laughable).

So basically you are saying in Nash's 17 year career he never snuck in and got 1 rebound from a 7 footer?
and since when does 1 rebound = defense?

Son, I can guard spot up shooters like Cournety Lee and Jason Terry with Bogut behind me that doesnt make me a good defender

Did you see the clip? Curry didn't sneak anywhere. He straight man handled Dwight Howard which isn't some random 7 footer. He has been the consensus most physically dominating player in the league for the past 5 to 10 years. Steve Nash has never done that nor could he ever do that. Just take the L and stop posting. This shit has been shut down.

He does play defense this year, unfortunately as soon as he picks up a foul, they hide him on someone and let Klay cover any above average PG in the matchup. This way he can have all the energy in the world to pull up from 30 feet to shoot 3s on the other end.

Why would the coaching staff want Curry to defend an opposing team's best player over better defensive players ?

Curry is actually a very good defensive player. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/12648764/how-stephen-curry-developed-top-flight-defender
Thanks to some clever new defensive principles, and despite his spindly frame, Curry has blossomed to become one of the NBA's most effective defenders -- ranking fifth among point guards in defensive real plus-minus. According to Synergy Sports, the opponents he guards have shot just 36.8 percent on the season. He's averaging a career high in steals and a career low in fouls.
He's even frustrating top-caliber opponents. Who knew that the stronger-looking Russell Westbrook struggled with Curry defending him this season? In three games against Curry, Westbrook shot far below his averages, at 32.9 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from deep.

But according to defensive real plus-minus, he has a more positive impact than more celebrated defenders such as Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley his teammate Shaun Livingston. And RPM suggests his defense is the best in the league among MVP-caliber guards, ahead of James Harden, Chris Paul or Damian Lillard.

That's cute, let's pretend Curry covered Westbrook the whole time Westbrook was on the floor  It was probably something like 30% of the time, but Curry will get all the credit. It's what happens when you're the MVP.

Interesting article for sure quite a few interesting points but then he said:

I was skeptical so I went and looked up game footage and it turns out this also happened

In the next games against OKC Klay is pretty much on Westbrook 80% of the time.
But according to defensive real plus-minus, he has a more positive impact than more celebrated defenders such as Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley his teammate Shaun Livingston.
Interesting as well, because Curry's Defensive RPM is 1.69 that's not even top 50 in the league. However his team mates Bogut and Green are first and second respectively at 5.50 and 5.24. Bailout much?

The reason Curry doesn't guard the other teams best player is because he's ****ing 6'3 and there's 2 other excellent and bigger perimeter defenders on his team. He's also in the top 5 in steals and he's clearly not hurting his team on the defensive end because they're 1st in the league. Stop trying to desperately find flaws in his game. He's the best offensive player in the league and he plays within his teams defensive system effectively, which happens to be #1 in the league.
