Previous eras players like Bird, Reggie Miller, Dale Ellis and the like got a much higher proportion of their 3-pointers by running off screens.
Today's player benefits from a significantly higher proportion of drive-and-kick 3-pointers, where the 3-point shooter just has to stand in one spot and wait for his defender to go help on penetration.
The drive-and-kick is a post-2005 invention.. It really didn't exist in previous eras other than on an incidental basis - it wasn't an every possession standard like today's game.. Obviously, the 2005 rule changes designed to "open up the middle of the floor" and "increase penetration" is the reason today's game is based on the drive-and-kick.
But again, 3-point shooters like Ray Allen benefited from the rule changes as well as the penetrators.. That's another reason Reggie > Allen, other than Reggie's statistical advantage - Reggie didn't play in the drive-and-kick era.. His game would be magnified in this era.
