View Full Version : Is Godbe one of the most like-able superstar in NBA history?s

He's got to be one of them, how can you not like such a crowd-pleasing hard playing, hard working fiery competitor? He's like this era's Jerry West/Elgin Baylor all tied into one.

The NBA will be have a huge void to fill the day he retires :(

You don't think so?

He's incredibly polarizing. I wouldn't call him likeable.

Even now, at the end of his career, he still draws significant positive and negative attention from his stans and haters, respectively. I can understand how the qualities you listed could be appealing but there's a negative aspect to his image as well; selfish, arrogant, chucker, etc. He also rapes.

I respect Kobe as a player largely for the positive qualities that you listed but his image is far from immaculate.

In a league of conniving untrustworthy superstars like:

Chris Paul
James Harden
Blake Griffin
Dwyane Wade

I think a guy who just appears to play the game with passion, intensity and hard work like Kobe Bryant is a breath of fresh air.

Hmmm well for some reason I interpret what others would call selfish as passionate. I mean, Jordan played with that edge too. Russell Westbrook right now plays with that edge he's probably the next closest player to Kobe heading into the next generation of players.

The 2000's had a lot of likeable stars. Vince Carter, Duncan, AI (very popular, likeable?), Nash, Baron, Lebron, Wade, Tmac, Ray, Dirk, Webber. The rest were assholes.

I wasn't trying to say that I personally buy into all of the negative aspects attributed to Kobe, just saying that they exist (at least to some). He's likeable to some, unlikeable to others, both perspectives exist and have large groups that subscribe to them. I'm sticking with polarizing.

Kobe is definitely a love/hate kind of guy. I used to hate him because when he first came into the league, he seemed to want to be Jordan so bad that it was just cringeworthy, and I grew up in the Jordan era, so I wasn't having any of it. He also took this "killer instinct" aspect of Jordan's to a retarded level at times, where he would literally shoot his team out of games. IMO, Jordan had the "killer instinct", but was a lot smarter of a player than Kobe and always knew how to play within the flow of a game. SO yeah, the game already had a Jordan.. It didn't need an imitation that never lived up.

That's why I prefer Bron now. He is his own player, plays the game in his own unique way, just like Magic, Bird, and Jordan were unique players when they came along.

That being said, I have really mellowed on Kobe alot as the years have gone on. Gotta respect what he has done whether you love or hate him.

has anyone had to overcome more adversity in their career?

this dude had to deal with a lazy-overweight shaq for many years

this dude had to deal with a poverty whore accuse him of rape with hopes of cashing in

this dude had to deal with playing on d-league level teams in the prime of his career as he stayed loyal to his city

this dude had to deal has had to deal with a rash on serious injuries robbing us of the last few years of his great career

if he somehow wins another championship he will truly go down as the GOAT. (unlikely though)

This is such a fallacy, Lebron is no more unique than Magic and Karl Malone.

And it's easy to like someone as fabricated as Lebron, everything he does and says is as calculated as his I'm coming home essay. Kobe has no filter and people hate it, doesn't mean he's not a great player.

Karl Malone was a big brother to Kobe. He even was disgusted that the Jazz made fun of Kobe about the rape allegations and defended him. But then Karl hit on his wife. That's why Kobe was pissed at Karl.

It's hard to imagine any player as likable, since every superstar, even Jordan has so many haters.

But when it comes to the mainstream, I find that the more likeable players are guys like a Shaq, because his size just really appeals and sticks out to the casual people. Shaq is really likable in that sense.

Grant Hill was really likable to the mainstream.

The way LeBron plays is unique actually. He is a Mish mash of a lot of different players and has a unique combination of size and athleticism that not a lot of nba players have hhad.

And I'm not disagreeing with you on the fabricated part. The decision was a blown out of proportion display, although ESPN did approach him about televising it. I'm also not looking at his return to Cleveland as some kind of altruistic cause that was only motivated by bring a championship to his city and righting wrongs, etc.. The grass was definitely looking pretty green up in Ohio with the recent draft picks.

He'll dude, he shit the bed in 2011 and was the major reason for the heat losing, and he has looked unsure in the past. I have noticed and it pissed me off. That being said, he looks more confident then ever this playoffs run, and I think his mental game is looking the strongest it ever has which I commend him for.

I'm not afraid to comment on his flaws. He has had plenty. I do however like his philosophy on basketball, and prefer his flavor to Kobe's.

That actually sums things up pretty well for myself. I thought he was extremely lucky to have Shaq and Phil around him, but he seemed to almost resent them as if they would steal his glory.

The Lakers are a team in the right place and they never fail to spend, spend, spend to get the best players. I always thought that Kobe would have had a very different career if he had played in smaller market.

Alright brosef, my life is destroyed now because of your troll attacks on this message board.

But just so you know, people with an understanding of human pyschology and skills of analysis could tell that Kobe was deeply psychologically insecure and always attempting to prove things about himself to others instead of already having the security of knowing who he was and just focusing on winning as a team.

It's why he emulated Jordan, it's why he shot them out of the finals against the Pistons(to prove he was now the man and not Shaq). It's why he purposely tried to get triple doubles and be the "facilitator" because people said he was hogging the ball with the last super team they built. Instead of just doing his thing, he has needed to prove to people for validation.

Jordan knew who he was, and was always the dominant alpha male that you wish Kobe was.
