View Full Version : How did the rednecks in Texas improve so much in education while CA is in the gutter?

When I was growing up, my state of California performed at the top of the pack in education. Texas on the other was the laughing stock of the nation, trading last place back and forth with Mississippi. Now Texas is improving dramatically in education while the state I grew up in is at the bottom in a downward spiral.

For 2014 Texas now has the 3rd highest graduation rate in the nation while California is tied at for 37-39th with Rhode Island and Minnesota.(btw what up with Oregon being dead last?). Even more, Texas is now number one in graduation rates for blacks and latinos(84%/85%) while California is at the bottom of the pack(68%/76%). In performance and achievement Texas is still only slightly above the middle of the pack but it's trending upwards(which you can only do from the bottom I guess). But only Mississippi and the District of Colombia perform worse than California students. This with California spending much more per student than Texas.

What's with our 2 largest states going in such opposite directions? You can't blame immigrants because both Texas and California have large Latino immigration populations. What is happening to my beautiful state and how are the rednecks in Texas doing so much better?

At least California has the 2nd most educated senior citizen population in the nation. :lol

Texas has always had great colleges...

anyway, 54% of DFW is composed of people who are not native Texans...people moved here from bad economies, many of the current residents are from Cali because the cost of living there is preposterous. So you should stop with the ignorant mind set that Texans are just a bunch of rednecks.

to be fair, southerners in the small towns pretty much live up to the stereotype. most of us live in major cities however, and are just as modern as any other metropolitan.

There is trailer trash and ghetto trash in every state...not just the south.

Go far enough outside of NY and you get the cast of Jersey Shore.

Go far enough outside of any city and you will find questionable people.

yeah i know, just saying that you don't really see the "stereotype" redneck texan in the big cities. we don't commute to work on horseback. also, california has just as much of a cowboy heritage as texas so i really don't understand wth californians are ragging on texans for..

I stopped at this motel in Henrietta a couple days ago which is a small town on the way to Dallas. I went up to the window and this real ornery lookin old dude with blood shot eyes and a cigarette hangin from his mouth just glared at me like "wtf do you want.."

I asked about a room and he was like "we're full." And honestly the dude looked like he was ready to point a shotgun at me for even walking onto his motel property. It was the kind of thing where if he did it to a minority you'd just figure "bah, typical"... except I'm white, so it was like extra weird :lol

But those kind of stereotypical people do exist out here, but as pt said you can find that in just about every state.

Actually the few renters I saw outside the rooms were quite the characters as well. Shuffling around with no shirt and disheveled hair, beer belly poking out. Not exactly respiting travelers or people in town on business :oldlol: More like people spending their social security checks on cigarettes and lotto and mayonnaise sandwiches.

It has a lot more to do with socioeconomics than it does race. children from wealthy families tend to do much better than children from poor families, regardless of skin color.

Oregon is probably the whitest state in the nation, yet they have the worst high school graduation rate. In Oregon, the people who are struggling to graduate are poor white kids.

Well part of it is politics IMO, because unions run California. The teachers union in particular is very strong. They WANT illegal immigration because it puts more kids in schools, gives teachers more leverage.

If you look at Cali's policies on immigration, they flat out ENCOURAGE illegal immigration. They're not just lax about enforcing against it, they make it illegal FRIENDLY. This IMO is a direct result of teacher union politicing. And they know the SOFFFFFT ass white liberals in the state are too scared to do anything about it bc racist.

The liberal game getting used against them. Sad thing is too, way more conservatives don't care about race than what people actually think. It's about culture. Conservatives value traditional culture, and they don't want foreign cultures, whether its hop hop or mexican etc taking over. If people assimilated more readily, there'd be a lot less backlash. But liberals want people to come here and do whatever they please, however they please, and then soapbox against their white peers if they make a peep about it. It's all for show, too. Trying to look like the lead warrior on justice and compassion. Even though their logic is assbackwards. Shit's such an embarrassment.

Be honest. Who would you guess does better in school? Poor Asian kids or middle class black kids?

This is exactly right.

As I just said to another poster, who does better in school? Poor Asians or middle class blacks?

To a left winger, they would think that is about race, but it's not. It IS culture. Asians have a culture of pushing their kids very hard to succeed.

I don't believe that Asians are inherently more likely to succeed than blacks. I DO believe that children who's parents push them hard are more likely to succeed.

Yeah. And there's nothing wrong with retaining certain parts of your culture and maintaining your own traditions but you have to know when and where to do as the romans do, or else people are going to naturally start to feel defensive. It's just the way human psychology works.

there's a pretty quick short cut.

difference between $4 and $3.87 is 13 cents. i'm sure you can do that in your head quickly. then 13cents + 12 cents = quarter.

It's cheaper?

Most of the residents who leave California earn less than the states medium household income.

Little known fact: Texas sends California more residents than any other state, and the amount of net residents Texas recieves once cross-migration is taken into account is almost negligible.

I'd like to see the data on that. There is a reason U-Haul rates are 2.5x the price from California to Texas vs Texas to California. They need to lower the rates because no one is going to Cali.

Probably because California has become a state of two extremes - the ultra wealthy in LA and Silicon Valley types and the poor immigrants and working class living in the slums of LA (I know i know this is a gross generalization but there is alot of truth to it.) CA middle class and upper middle class is fastly eroding and many of these people have moved to places like Texas, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, etc. Many corporations are located in Texas because it is looked as a "business" friendly state and corporations hire many white collar workers ala middle class and upper middle class folks. CA on the other hand has trouble keeping it's businesses and is stereotyped as "liberal" and "not business friendly."

Another reason could be due to California's low property taxes that are capped at roughly 1%. Sure home values are high in CA but on average the same home in another state would be subject to higher property tax. Long story short, property taxes are the biggest financial support for local schools.

Nothing on that list is particularly surprising. California has a huge budget deficit. That was going to hurt its ability to educate its population eventually.
