You gonna try to convince me Holland is a soccer power now? XD

It's a European trait to give up.

It's an American trait to never surrender.

I remember talking about this during the World Cup but I'll restate it here.

Even with lesser talent, the US can still win games due to our natural affinity for clutchness. This is not genetic as Americans of all races and ethnicities are clutch. This is a cultural benefit. We've seen it when the Americans managed to hold off the British in 1776 with far less firepower. We saw it when a bunch of college kids beat the greatest Soviet hockey team ever.

Even in this thread, we have a Dutch dude bragging about getting 3rd place in the World Cup. 3rd place is just the 2nd loser to any American. It's these differences in mentality that separate us. Our cultural upbringing leads us to being more clutch than any other nation on Earth

tldr: USA clutch as fck

Good f*cking post. This is something Euros find difficult to understand, but they need to get their heads around it. Clutchness is a part of American culture.

Imagine how good US would be if they actually cared about soccer/football/futbol.

It'd be like basketball and the Olympics and WW1 and WW2 and every other competitive thing that's ever happened in the past 100 years. World domination

Very terrifying.
You do realise a lot of that has to do with your history of selective slave-breeding, a geographical position that is something of a safe-haven, and the fact that the United States isn't really a country but a disparate landmass containing various peoples (i.e. basically a continent, and the only wealthy one of its kind).

Strictly speaking, one should say the 'United States are...' rather than 'the United States is...' - one didn't really change into the other until the end of the 19th century at least.

England would be a good team if they were team UK. Then they could have Bale and Ramsay. As long as they keep being just England, they will suck.

Congrats on the win. For the sake of argument; I don't see how the 'US doesn't even care about football/soccer' argument holds up though. We've got 16 million inhabitants and admittedly, this is by far the most popular sport in the Netherlands. You've got 320 million people or something like that? Even if only a fraction of your population is interested in soccer you should still be pretty close as far the raw 'how many people play soccer in each country' numbers go.

Don't even know why I replied here, most likely I'm only gonna get trolled anyway..

http://www.mlssoccer.com/worldcup/2014/news/article/2014/07/14/world-cup-germanys-triumph-most-watched-soccer-match-ever-us?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=WorldCup&utm_campaign=Unpaid

A total of 26.5 million people watched Germany defeat Argentina on ABC and Univision, numbers that make the game the most viewed soccer match in the history of the United States. The match beat out the USMNT's draw with Portugal earlier in the group stage by a half-million viewers.

While 17.3 million people watched the game on the English-language broadcast on ABC, 9.2 million watched it on Univision. Those numbers made it the most watched game ever on a Spanish-language network. (Two previous games, USA-Portugal and the 1999 Women's World Cup final, had more viewers in English.)

Betwen 5 and 5:30, when the match was in extratime, an average of 20.8 million viewers were tuned in on ABC. The game also had 1.8 million live unique viewers on ESPN's streaming platform, WatchESPN.
While obviously not every person in the Netherlands cares about soccer, the difference between Americans and the Dutch in terms of the raw number of citizens who care probably isn't that different when you take into account the number of immigrants from other countries who are more likely to be fans of the sport.

With that said obviously Americans are starting to care more about soccer.
