Same names, though I have Artest over Allen.

If it's for the 2000s-current, Doug Christie makes the list, possibly as high as #2, and Bowen of course.

Christie is underrated but hes not on the level of any of those guys maybe Battier. Same with Bowen:biggums: :biggums:

Christie was the best perimeter defender in the league for three years.

Not even gonna address your Bowen comment. He was better than Allen, who is one of the least fundamentally sound great defenders out there and he finds himself out of position far too often, because of his lack of focus when he's not defending the ballhandler.

More by peaks/primes, considering everything, in no particular order:

Bowen
Artest (peaked a bit before '05 though)
AK47
Tony Allen
Battier

HM: Kawhi, Iggy, LeBron, Kobe...

But it's very difficult to name the clear 5 best, since some of those I've mentioned as HM's could easily be there too...

When did Kidd past his prime as a defender?

Not sure just how good he was, but Tayshaun Prince is the first person I thought of that has yet to be mentioned. But that's more of a "since 2000" rather than the last 10 years.

Also mention....
Ruben Patterson
Raja Bell
Shawn Marion
Hughes
Sefolosha

...None as top 5, except maybe Matrix, but definitely worth mentioning.

Prince was a good defender than could be a very important cog in one of the best defenses but hes not close to the level of the players i mentioned. Those players could be the best defenders/anchors of a top tier defense, players like Prince and Bowen couldnt

One dimensional in what sense? In particular talking about Patterson and Bell.

And I'm not sure any perimeter defender, other than Artest, AK47, Pippen, Jordan, Moncrief, Payton, Lebron could ever anchor an entire D. There may be some older guys I don't really know. But otherwise, that's a very, very elite group, if "anchoring a D" is the criteria.

Shawn Marion is the best of the bunch. Dude can flat out defend back in his younger days.

Jimmy Butler should be mentioned, he has no weaknesses as a perimeter defender. Disciplined, patient, strong, quick, perfect height, athletic, high basketball IQ, doesn't jump on every pumpfake. His defense vs Kobe, Melo, Lebron has been amazing the past couple seasons. Only player that goes off vs him is Durant.

Kawhi is more disciplined.

He was considered the best defensive PG for a few years. I'm going by reputation alone, as I have not had the pleasure of watching all of these players often enough to judge their D.

Kawhi has better physical gifts, still not as good as Jimmy. Check Lebron's numbers vs Kawhi compared to Butler.
