I was just reminiscing about old time in Real Madrid in the end of the galactico era after Makelele was sold and they were desperately looking for a player to somewhat fill his void.

They had their run with some players trying, and at some point they just said **** it and bought Thomas Gravesen. This man was, if not the most weird person ever among those. Special workhorse who just abused people on the court. And regulary shouted orders in a demeaning way to superstars like Raul, Zidane, Fatnaldo etc. He was so intense that he hurt Robinho during practice. He never let the gas up and just went 100% all the time.

Check this video of some highlights from him:oldlol:

Not even close to mediocre

He had to compete with Ruud, Bergkamp, Kluivert, Makaay and even van Hoojdonk or whatever his name was.. insane depth

Im not sure i ever appreciated mediocre players at Barca.. they always pissed me off.. I did like OP's pick Gravesen though because he was ruining RM's chemistry and injuring players in training.. just a fun guy to watch.. unless he is on your team.. same as Joey Barton

This dude is probably the only mediocre player i liked at Barca

Shevshenko is a "mediocre" footballer now. :facepalm :facepalm :facepalm Best player in the world at one point.

Another player in recent times was Marko Pantelic.

He carried himself as if he was a Greek demigod. All the attitude of Zlatan but only half the ability. But he did know how to put it away when it counted.

One of my earliest memories is the 2005 Champions League Final with Milan vs. Liverpool. I knew he was good at the time, so I thought he'd be good with Chelsea. Nope.

LJJ, I'm obviously talking about his Chelsea career. He was good at AC, no shit.

Why not Drogba? He was pretty mediocre last season. Picking a great player past his prime is just a lame ass answer.

All right I wanted to put this player in the OP to but I just love him too much to call him mediocre but I guess for elite football he really was. He was hated by all other teams except for Madrid, where everybody loved him. Big heart, and had that tendancy to open up the game with just mindblowing passes.

This I think was in Zidanes last match ever, and Guti did this. Maybe my most memorable football highlight EVER. Just wow.

If you think one of the most talented and technically gifted Spanish players ever qualifies as mediocre, then I don't know what to say to you. Guti was far from mediocre, he was simply a headcase and lacked intensity and involvement most of the time. Still one of those players who made it worthwile to pay the ticket to the match.

As for my favorite mediocre player...off the top of my head it's probably Palermo. Huge bust anywhere outside of Argentina, extremely limited player, still somehow managed to be a fan favorite anywhere he played (not to mention Boca Junior's all-time top scorer)

I agree. The word mediocre sounds a tad bit insulting when referencing the aforementioned players. I pretty much just posted guys who I deemed as non focal points that I greatly appreciated.

But yes, I would never classify Genaro or Veron as mediocre...

Just messing with you bro. Marco was sub mediocre for the majority of his career.

Nick Young
06-08-2015, 05:22 PM
Alan Smith of Leeds and Man United. He was a hard worker. Worked his ass off.

Ivica Olic-I'd want this guy as the first choice striker on my team. Athletic beast and generates chances just by being a headless chicken and chasing down every ball. Had great composure and was a good finisher. UNDERRATED.

Dirk Kuyt. He was a great finisher and scored loads of goals from the right wing, while working his ass off defensively, and also being big strong and athletic. I don't understand it when people say he sucks. He produces. Not bad when playing as a striker either.

Harry Kewell. He was so inconsistent and mentally weak, but I really thought some of his early Leeds wonder goals were some of the most badass goals I had ever seen, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt throughout his career because of that.

Mido is a mediocre guy who was underappreciated. Had the size and talent to be like Berbatov and Zlatan, but he was the biggest idiot ever. He preened around more than Ronaldo does, and has a massive ego, and he was a more violent stupid psycho than Suarez. My favorite Mido moment was the African Cup of Nations I was in Egypt for. Coach subs off Mido, Mido throws a tantrum, and refuses to leave the field and looks like he wants to fight the coach before he eventually walks off. 2 minutes later, the striker subbed on for him scores with his first touch of the game. Mido was an idiot, but I still had faith eventually he would get it together and become a good player. It never happened, but I still appreciate his skills as a footballer and style on the field.

My favorite player ever is Riquelme. I'd say he's under appreciated. Many people think he sucks!

Loads of players peak early-it happens when they have physical dominance over kids their age, and then their skills never develop and they lose their athletic advantage when they grow up and play vs men.

Freddy Adu is shit. The textbook example why you shouldn't overhype a kid too early.

Everyone have given up on Adu bro. Nobody talks about him as a prospect anymore.

We got guys currently that are better than he is.

Ok, a couple more I just thought of:

David Odonkor: I remember there was quite a lot of hype around him when Betis surprisingly signed him. He had, for some strange reason, been capped with Germany in 2006 and, word had it, he could run the 100m dash below 11 seconds. Sadly, that was all he could apparently do. He was very bad with the ball and even worse at crossing, so not the most promising outlook for a supposed right wing. He was so bad he hardly ever got any playing time. I doubt anyone remembers him in Spain.

Marco Perez: colombian striker dubbed "la sombra". He was loaned to Zaragoza when I was still living there, and I remember this happening on his presentation day. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkTAxDWWRqE#t=0m17s) Needless to say that was the highlight of his career in La Liga, but he will be forever remembered in Zaragoza.

out of current players, i've always liked ever banega. he might finally be living up to his potential after this past season but he's consistently shown to be a mediocre player with occasional world class passing ability

Not really mediocre but unnapreciated:

Alvaro Recoba - Inter
Jay Jay Okocha - PSG
Jerome Rothen - Monaco
Harry Kewell - Liverpool
Nelson Cuevas - River Plate, i think
Ole Gunnar Solskj

Yes. Emile Heskey was a mediocre player. Too many posters are posting former greats..

A mediocre player to me is Ashley Young. He's actually had a decent season for United but he always got shitted on and never lived up to that transfer fee. He is a pretty versatile player and he does have a great attitude and gives it his all. The gif of the bird shitting in his mouth is classic too.

Another is that fullback from Everton Tony Hibbert. Scored his first goal for the club in a meaningless friendly and the supporters rushed the field to celebrate :oldlol:

I know this thread is getting out of hand because it has become "what non-superstars you should appreciate...."

Sticking with the theme of mediocrity, I am going with this guy......he plays alongside one of the best players in the game for country. Played for the biggest club and I guess I appreciate his services for his country but he is damn garbage. So much f'ing potential but fool's gold.

I appreciate that willingness to try hard but he's garbage.

Another player in recent times was Marko Pantelic.
http://i.imgur.com/kRZChCC.jpg

He carried himself as if he was a Greek demigod. All the attitude of Zlatan but only half the ability. But he did know how to put it away when it counted.
Van Pantelaar :lol
There's a facebook page that left status updates which parodied the way he talked. It was wildly popular for a time. 1st on my list is a guy who appeared in most fictional anecdotes by that page in his adventures with Pantela.

Also honorable mention to El Chino who was much better than mediocre, but never got a true chance to shine since Inter was always stacked

La Galina de Oro

Had quite an impact in my hometown team (Catania) and is still scoring his 5-10 goals per year in mid-table Serie A teams.
I swear his talent level is way higher than it seems fro mhis career.

IMO he was better than mediocre but Veron...

I was going to reply post by post after seeing Sheva, Gattuso, Guti and then Veron (VERON!)... but then I saw this thread is full of outstanding players labelled "mediocre". WTF dudes.

Yeah i already said that

Nani had a pretty good couple of seasons after CR left.. definitely not mediocre

If people get confused what is mediocre, type 'england national team' in google, scroll down to the squad section and you will see what mediocre is

Ambrosini. Dude played in a midfield with Pirlo, Kaka, Gatusso, and Seedorf. Definitly the odd one out in that group.

Guti is another one. Most English players. For some reason Mateja Kezman played for Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and PsG....

He was there when Beck and Ronhaldinho were on Milan as well no?

Jasi
06-09-2015, 06:27 PM
He was there until two years ago.
I wouldn't call him a mediocre player at all, but he certainly wasn't on par with his teammates in that midfield.
