A pretty interesting documentary came out, called the Nightmare about this. I've only ever once experienced it, maybe 4 or 5 years ago but I found it weird that I saw nearly the exact same thing that a few of the people in the documentary described, despite never knowing about it before I saw it. A shadow figure entering my room and trying to choke me. Pretty much what 80% of the people in the documentary described.
