View Full Version : it pains me more than anything knowing that kobe was 5 wins away from being GOAT

2004 - 3 wins
2008 - 2 wins
thats the difference between 7 modern day titles and 5
i can only imagine the pain that must flow in the bodies of bran stans
if letting 2 slip away out of 7 is the worst thing i can think of...
then DOUBLE the finals losses for a lebron fan must feel more than twice as bad.
lebrons gone to 6 nba finals.
-bring what you gave to detroit into the finals against sanantonio in 2007
-show up in 2011
-defend a rookie in 2014
-keep your d*ck in your pants and close the deal in 2015
it was so simple.
instead ... 4 rings are flushed down the toilet and youre outside the top 10
then imagine if ray allen missed that shot
1 for 6
:biggums:
what else could possibly go wrong for this guy

'04 title wouldn't have been that essential for Kobe, it was gonna be just another Finals where Shaq won MVP. '08 was critical though, would have won MVP/Finals MVP in the same season and would have 3peated, this time as the teams best player.

imagine if he had prime shaq
just imagine
Assuming you give Kobe the FMVP both years he would still only have 4 to Jordan's 6.
Especially since Kobe winning that 2000 ring isnt nearly enough to put him as the GOAt over Jordan just because he has 7.

wrong. the lakers lost cause kobe played bad
if he makes his shots he gets finals mvp... which is the only way LA wins the series
kobe lead the lakers in scoring all year... 1st,2nd,3rd rounds
shaq lead the lakers in scoring during the finals cause kobe couldnt beat the double teams and collapsing defense
had the lakers won it would have meant kobe was beating the detroit defense and continued his dominance over the lakers scoring load
thats the only way they would have won.
so no ... shaq wouldnt have been finals mvp in victory. only in defeat could he claim that

Don't worry, at least he got to play with Shaq, and the Lakers were able to acquire Pau for Kwame Brown. Not to mentioned that Fisher was able to hit clutch shots against the 5th or 6th seeded Boston Celtics in game 7. So look at the bright side because it could have been worse.

'00 .25 ring
'01 .50 ring
'02 .50 ring
'09 1.00 ring
'10 1.00 ring
BUT, he clearly COST his team rings in '04 and '08, which would mean
'04 -1.00 ring
'08- 1.00 ring
Overall,
+1.25 rings.

Even if he won those years, he'd still be far behind Jordan. Even Kobe's 3 rings with Shaq are giant asterisks with Shaq purposefully deflating balls. Shameful

06-12-2015, 02:07 AM
i'd say its more like this
2000 - .65 + .20 ( bonus for saving the season in game 7 WCF )
2001 - .99 ( shaq was 0.1 better )
2002 - .99 ( ditto )
2009 - 1.00
2010 - 1.00
and you don't lose rings youve already won by losing in the finals lol... the ring they would have won THAT year is the ring thats deducted. the hypothetical one on the line

7*
-1: 2000 deflategate
-1: 2001 deflategate
-1: 2002 deflategate
I think it's safe to subtract half of a ring for the 2002 rig job too
-.5: 2002 WCF rigjob
So 3.5 rings is a pretty solid career, but not close to MJ

Winning matters, but the way you won matters too.
Even if Kobe won two more, Jordan remains the best ever.
Jordan won 6 as the player, Kobe won 2.

Man 7/7 he'd blow lebron out of the water. Playing alongsode shaq would hinder his goatness against jordan. But no one would win fmvp over shaq in his prime.

Yeah, Kobe would've won a ring in '04 and '08, but he still wouldn't be close to MJ.
5 MVP's
6 Rings
6 FMVP's
1 DPOY
vs
1 MVP
7 Rings
3 FMVP's
0 DPOY's
Not even close. Kobe would need 4 MVP's, 8 rings, 4 FMVP's, and 1 DPOY to even be in the conversation.
SwayDizzle
06-12-2015, 05:38 AM
Kobe can't pass MJ, unless he did 4 straight chips with 4 straight FMVPs. Let's say Kobe won 08 with FMVP and then 2011 with FMVP. Then he's GOAT.

He'd be in the conversation. He probably wouldn't have an argument over KAJ, let alone MJ.

Not so much 5 wins away, but I look at those as 'If the Lakers got a different Finals opponent.
If Detroit hadn't gagged away games 3/6 at home vs. Boston or Cleveland finishes off the Celtics in 2008.
If the Nets/Pacers don't let Detroit off the hook in 2004.

i'm fairly certain after the fourth straight he would be consensus GOAT. 3 with Shaq as one-two punch and 4 straight with 4 FMVP would be pure domination, MJ-like yet one step further.

1 MVP, 7 rings, and 4 FMVP's vs 5 MVP's, 6 rings, 6 FMVP's, and 1 DPOY. Sure, Kobe will have 1 ring more than MJ, but he'll also have 4 fewer MVP's, 2 fewer FMVP's, and 0 DPOY. He'd be in the top 3 though.

Wilt was also five wins away from being the GOAT as well. In fact, in those five game seven losses, his team lost four of them by 2, 1, 4, and 2 points. And in those five series, Wilt was the best player on the floor in four of them, and in the other, he outplayed an 11 time winner (as he would in their other three H2H's that went seven games.)
In those five series...
34 ppg 27 rpg .468 FG% (post-season NBA shot a FG% of .411)
30 ppg 32 rpg .555 FG% (post-season NBA shot a FG% of .429)
22 ppg 25 rpg .480 FG% (post-season NBA shot a FG% of .446)
12 ppg 25 rpg .500 FG% (post-season NBA shot a FG% of .431)
23 ppg 24 rpg .625 FG% (post-season NBA shot a FG% of .455)

Swap rosters with Russell in their ten years in the league..
and likely those 10, plus the one he won in '72...for a total of 11.
